Nike SB x Frame Skate Dunk Low Pro 'Habibi'
The first Nike SB collaboration to stem from the Middle East, these nation-minded sneakers arrive as an innovative team-up with Dubai’s very own skate-shop FRAME. Inspired by founder Peter Ahn’s ‘diverse range of interests’ and translating from Arabic to represent ‘a celebration of love’, the ‘Habibi’ Dunk Low Pro captures the very essence of Dubai’s ‘heart of the city’ mantra with bold colourings and creative composure.
Opening in 2017, FRAME is a multi-brand concept skate store located in Dubai’s bustling ‘Design District’. With its overall ethos stemming from ‘the idea of involving into perspective’, with ‘perspective’ in this context meaning 'one FRAME, one vision’, the brand actively taps into the notion of celebrated diversity and non-conformist ideals. The first and only Club 58 account located in the Middle East and North Africa, FRAME continues to unite like-minded skaters and community-led urbanists through their monthly skate jams and their down-to-earth initiatives. Following in the footsteps of similar skate-shop collaborations, such as Nike SB’s achievements with Berlin-based Civilist, Japan’s Instant Skateboards and San Mateo’s Atlas, this city-led ‘Habibi’ collab tells the story of the ‘most universal reason for our existence - love’. Accompanied by a FRAME exclusive pixel flash game centered around playable skate-characters ‘Falco’ and ‘Pearl’, the revolutionary skate shop takes full advantage of this honourable milestone in Middle Eastern skate culture.
With its red, green, white and black colourway actively mirroring the country’s striped flag, these patriotic sneakers host similar aesthetics to Nike SB’s previously released ‘Tricolour’ Dunk High from 2016, 2020’s remastered Dunk Low ‘Brazil’ from earlier this year and of course, the iconic ‘Chicago’ colourway that debuted way back in ‘85. Premium tumbled-leather and durable ripstop combine together to construct the uppers with added character and court-spun tradition, whilst the dual-hued classic toned cupsole is neatly aligned with a traction-orientated underfoot that carries forward the OG Dunk’s basketball led tread. Perforations across the crisp-white toe box remain loyal to the silhouettes timeless blueprint, whilst the frayed-edge and abstract red-and-white laces secure the double padded tongues across the natural arch of the foot in contrasting shades of both black and white. Tying its aesthetic to its pre-mentioned ‘flash game’, embroidered falcon and pearl decals offer reference to the releases accompanying ‘Falco’ and ‘Pearl’ digitised characters. A dominant cracked black leather Swoosh decorates the sidewall, with a shadowing thick-wale cord Swoosh behind styled in a shade of vibrant green for a mix-match finish. Custom split-sole branding is styled with abstract detailings that reference the FRAME crew’s favourite plaza skate spot in Dubai, while the clean-lined ‘Nike’ embroidered branding across the padded ankle collar seals this UAE-themed sneakers off in style.
Inspired by the ‘common element’ of love and by both parties’ appreciation for skate, sneaker-culture and the cities they serve, this nationalistic release offers a refreshing take on an ageless basketball icon. Celebrating the Middle East’s foray into the skate world and its diversified ‘heart of the city’ mark-up, both Nike SB and multifaceted FRAME deliver something truly unique to the ever-evolving Dunk rosta for 2020.
