Nike SB x Concepts Dunk High 'Turdunken'
Family festivities and the legendary ‘Turdunken’ holiday dish inspire Nike SB’s latest collaboration with internationally renowned streetwear pioneer Concepts to produce the mixed-material Dunk High ‘Turdunken’ Shoes. Masters of the art of collaborative execution and creative expression, Concepts surfaces as the latest Dunk High collaborator for 2020, pulling out all the stops to deliver a truly unique rendition of the famed basketball profile in time for the holiday season.
Inventiveness and against-the-norm aesthetics flow naturally like water off a duck’s back when it comes to Boston-based Concepts. Nurturing a decade-long relationship with Nike SB that began back in 2008, this timely collaboration finds itself well-placed in follow-up of the wildly popular Lobster Dunk Lows, the soft-pink ‘When Pigs Fly’ Dunk Hi and the iridescent ‘Holy Grail’ Dunk Low from 2015. Inspired by the Louisiana staple made nationally famous by the evangelized citations made by telecaster John Madden during NFL Thanksgiving Day games, the aptly titled ‘TurDunken’ (aka Mallard) sneakers, as detailed by Concepts Creative Director Deon Point, ‘were formulated with an eye to the triage of food, football and friendship’ that rightly characterises the festive season. Coming full circle to mimic the Dunk’s symbolic sports-specific heritage, the ‘TurDunken’ is served up as a figurative representation of ‘the community atmosphere driven by skate shops around the world’.
Styled with mixed-material uppers constructed from down-like quarter fabrics and laser-cut overlays replicating the brushed-back feathers of a mallard duck, these conceptual Dunk High sneakers spread their wings to match similar profiles such as the recent Atmos Elephant and the ‘Black Sheep’ NBA Dunk High Pro from early last year. Textured furry and flat suede in shades of brown and black help supply layers of character to the design, whilst the colour-matched puffy laces secure the shimmering iridescent-like padded tongues across the natural arch of the foot to mimic the duck’s distinctive green profile above its chestnut-toned chest. The split-tone fully vulcanised cupsole and traction-orientated outsole pays homage to the mammal’s washed-orange webbed feet, with Nike’s OG Zoom Air unit keeping wearers light on their feet regardless of setting. The profile’s iconic perforated toe-box helps to circulate air around the sneaker during high-intensity wear, with the padded toile-print collar lining and sockliner delivering further characterised value to this unique design. Colour-contrasting shimmering side-wall Swooshes pay homage to the animals metallic-like glaze, with the playfully re-written tongue tags styled in bright-yellow with ‘Nike Duck Pro’ commemorative branding and celebratory ‘Concepts’ branding across the interior that matches its characterised design.
Playing to the brand’s strengths of never taking themselves too seriously, Concept’s latest tongue-in-cheek collaboration with skatewear pioneers Nike SB celebrates ‘eternal camaraderie’ in its rawest form. Joined by the release of a similarly styled faux-fur jacket, a heavyweight t-shirt and a striking neon-orange Fisherman Beanie, humour-led odes to national tradition help to elevate the sneaker’s ingenious aesthetic, with both Nike SB and Concept’s time-honoured visionary mastery shining through its never-before-seen abstract, mallard-manner design.
