Nike SB x Carpet Company
Following on from 2019’s hardware collection in collaboration with Polar and Last Resort AB front-man Pontus Alv and 2017’s limited-run release in partnership with John Vitale’s The Killing Floor, Maryland-based Carpet Company turns its artistic guise towards a deceptively holographic collaboration with long-time powerhouse Nike SB; introducing the Nike SB x Carpet Company Dunk High Premium. Famed for their DIY aesthetic, their ‘labour of love’ undertones and their Habibi-styled habituals, brothers Ayman and Osama Abdeldayem continue to demonstrate just how influential their small-town roots have become since their basement beginnings in 2015.
With a love for Baker Skateboards and all-time skate legends such as Jeff Lenoce and Geoff Rowley, the Abdeldayem brothers continue to take the contemporary skatewear market by storm. Proudly celebrating their Egyptian and Arabic heritage in line with modernity, Carpet is a brand woven from humble beginnings. Founded in their parent’s Baltimore basement and initially thought of as ‘The Skateboard Technician Company’ by their father, with reference to their balanced full-time jobs held at both NASA and Pepco during the day, Carpet is an unruled brand that decided to take an all-together different route toward skate-centric styling and hardware. Now situated just outside downtown Baltimore in their own branded spot, Carpet crafts all of its decks by hand via a classic screen-printing methodology to ensure unique character and authenticity remains common place, whilst their bi-annual pop-up shop provides the perfect hang-out for locals and good-friends to swing by to both catch-up and catch their latest drops. Laser-etched logos, individually-numbered decks and custom embroideries help give the brand’s truthful aesthetic that extra edge, whilst the brothers’ free-spirited nature and willingness to express their own admiration for their Egyptian heritage is something that continues to inspire far beyond their Maryland remit.
Switching up the Nike SB x Frame Skateboards Dunk Low Pro ‘Habibi’ context to cater to the Abdeldayem brothers’ free and easy sense of character, the reveal-style Nike SB x Carpet Company Dunk High Premium skate shoes offer their very own distinctive take on a courtside classic. Pairing suede, canvas and premium-grade leather, these supple high-collared Dunks feature tear-away fabric overlays that are designed to be worn-down to reveal quirky custom graphics inspired by the brand’s admirable screen-printing processes. Wispy hues of dark-sulfur, white and royal-pulse make for a season-friendly styling if worn as is, whilst the coconut-cream coloured cupsole is complemented by a washed gum-brown outsole for an archaic, dusty soled twist that hints at the co-founders’ Arabian roots. The OG circular tread and forefoot pivot circle transforms basketball functionality to meet the demands of skate, while the pre-installed Zoom Air unit across the sockliner provides a cushioned and impact-absorbing wear regardless of setting. Puffy and interchangeable laces stem from just above the perforated all-white toe-box to complement the tear-away recessed eyelets as they secure the foam-cushioned padded ‘Nike SB Dunk High’ embroidered tongue across the natural arch of the foot. The brand’s signature stamp of certified character takes form via both the embroidered silver-stitch C-star across the exterior heel panels and printed ‘Carpet’ underfoot stamp, whilst Arabic embroidery and translated ‘Nike’ detailing across the throwback ‘Angry Man’ and ‘Thank You Man’ insoles pays homage to heritage and the brand’s first-ever release. For added quirkiness, ready-to-reveal split ankle-collar decals hide additional ‘Brought to you by the Habibi’s at Carpet Company’ detailing behind crisp-white overlays for an added sense of creative appeal.
Adhering to their overspread namesake in true Habibi fashion, this signature Dunk High Premium release is also accompanied by a capsule collection of street-centric apparel - all of which is styled with subtle reference to the brothers’ Arabic traditions. Both a camo-style cap and crisp-white tee are embellished with golden cursive translations of ‘Nike’ across their ‘Carpet SB’ collaborative design, whilst the season-friendly heavyweight Nike SB x Carpet Company Skate Hoodie pairs textured intricacies with creative character to honour its carpet-like logo namesake. An energetic East meets West release inspired by traditional culture and celebrated customs, Maryland’s Carpet Company welcomes a refreshing Arabian twist on a coveted Nike SB classic.
