Nike SB 'Raygun Tie-Dye' Dunk Low Pro

Nike SB 'Raygun Tie-Dye' Dunk Low Pro Shoes | Flat

Known for his endless curiosity, energy and enthusiasm, Nike SB have paid tribute to their influential and sorely missed product manager Sandy Bodecker - who sadly passed away last year - with a three-part footwear capsule which reintroduces the celebrated ‘Raygun’ model with new tie-dye inserts.

Promoted through a funky 1970’s style campaign which included a house band of Bootsy Collins, Snoop Dogg and George Clinton, a fictional basketball team entitled the ‘Roswell Rayguns’ - inspired by the infamous 1947 Roswell UFO incident - was developed by Nike in the early 2000’s and became the story behind the original Raygun Dunk. Introduced during the brands iconic pink-box era during late 2004-2005, distinctive yellow and red inserts and a small embroidered extraterrestrial character holding rayguns were distinguishing features of the design and have been translated into the 2019 release alongside additional tie dye elements in reference to a favourite hoodie worn by the great Sandy Bodecker.

Sizes range from adult to toddler so everyone can be kitted out in the modern day iteration, which much like the archival release, has smooth high quality leather uppers coloured in black or white depending on either the ‘Home’ or the super limited skate shop exclusive ‘Away’ colourway. The models signature red and yellow tones have been translated into mottled tie dye style decoration on shaped side panels on each shoe whilst solid black elongated Swoosh ticks wrap around the back of the heel where ‘NIKE’ branding has been embroidered onto a curved tab. Unedited from the original design, below this a green and white embroidered extraterrestrial character holding ray guns can be seen on the outer edge of the side heel. Perforation has been added across the toe vamp for ventilation and a Zoom Air unit within the sockliner supports responsive cushioning for wear on and off your board in addition to a multidirectional herringbone tread pattern.

Joining Nike in 1982 as their wear test coordinator after being recognised for his highly detailed reports during a wear test programme for runners, Sandy Bodecker headed up Nike’s action-sports department before being asked to oversee the launch of the Nike SB line in 2002. As a novice to skateboarding, Sandy favoured snow sports and running but nonetheless brought his natural inquisitiveness to the project and got stuck in learning the history of skating, the who’s who and the mindset of skateboarders so Nike could invest in the culture and talent within the industry rather than purely following a money making scheme. Often seen sporting a certain tie dye hoodie, wacky ensembles and bold footwear, Sandy’s own personality was naturally imparted within each footwear model which have been seen on the feet of up and coming skaters such as Richard Mulder, Eric Koston and Paul Rodriguez alongside the legendary Lance Mountain who were all selected for Nike SB’s first pro team and thanks to Sandy were treated equally to other Nike athletes. Additionally, a number of skate shop only styles were released through Sandy’s vision to support independent skate stores by directing sales from collectors editions which incorporated custom artwork from selected creatives for stand-out looks and limited edition designs.

2019 has been one of Nike SB’s biggest years yet with sporadic releases as part of the 10th anniversary of the Stefan Janoski partnership and a host of collaborative styles with the likes of team rider Oskar Rozenberg, Polar Skate Co., by Parra and numerous reintroduced archive models. It’s fitting that this decade has been signed off with a capsule that is dedicated to such an icon within the company whose vision for the Nike SB line ultimately changed the face of traditional skate footwear.
