HUF Spring 2022 - Celebrating 20 Years
HUF’s 20th anniversary Spring 2022 collection. A celebration of the brand’s creative past and the legacy of Keith Hufnagel, this commemorative release pays homage to skateboarding’s golden era of the early ‘00s with its nostalgic aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the archives and featuring a selection of seasonal HUF clothing that cites Hufnagel’s personal style and the brand’s early San Francisco roots for reference.
A brand with origins that ultimately began the same time as Manhattan born skater Keith Hufnagel started marking favoured NYC skate spots with his personalised ‘HUF-ONE’ tag, HUF was officially founded in 2002 when the Real Skateboards pro traded New York for San Francisco and opened his first store in the city’s Tenderloin neighbourhood. Choosing to showcase apparel and footwear from brands such as Nike SB and Vans, HUF’s visionary direction was one guided by a view that skateboarding represents an extension of a lifestyle as much as it does a sport or hobby. One of the first brands to bridge the gap between skateboarding, hip hop and street culture, HUF continues to be known for their part in establishing the early era of the streetwear genre. As the brand’s popularity grew, HUF introduced its own line of self-branded apparel, accessories and hardware, with their iconic etch-a-sketch logo designed by Benny Gold making a re-appearance in the brand's 10th anniversary collection from 2012. Original HUF Worldwide skate team members included the likes of Brad Comer and Josh Matthews, with Team Handsome and Fucking Awesome rider Dylan Reider going on to re-imagine his first Gravis pro model via the HUF Dylan Slip-On in 2014, just two years before his passing.
Speaking to the late Keith Hufnagel’s style and sensibilities, as well as to the skater’s original vision for HUF, the brand’s 20th anniversary collection includes an all-new selection of HUF clothing. Inspired by the OG graphic tees released by the brand during the early 2000’s, Spring ‘22 HUF t-shirts include the overdyed Cooper Stripe Knit T-Shirt that features a vintage ‘90s skate aesthetic with geometric tape stripes and a flag label adorned left chest pocket. Paying homage to the brand’s street graffiti logo, the yarn dyed Crown Stripe Knit T-Shirt features repeated stripe detailing with an embroidered left chest HUF crown.
All-over graphics appear across designs such as the pullover HUF Canned Hoodie, whilst the Magic Dragon Hoodie and the loose fitting Fun Crewneck Sweatshirt are styled with reference to Hufnagel’s love for custom graphics and his original ties to brands such as Fun Skateboards from ‘93. Tailored to a regular fitting and similarly inspired by ‘90s sportswear stylings, the HUF Taped 1/4 Zip Fleece features on-seam welt pockets, a vintage mock neck collar, piped branding and with direct embroidery centre chest detailing heavily influenced by the archives. For colder settings, lightweight HUF jackets include the water-repellent Teton 1/4 Zip Anorak, the angling inspired Tackle Lightweight Jacket and the block colour HUF Essentials Zip Standard Shell Jacket styled with OG HUF branding.
Focused on honouring skateboarding as a way of life with influence continuing to be borrowed from music, street and art culture, recent collaborations include on-going capsules with artists Steven Harrington and Rockin’ Jelly Bean, alongside a recent homage to jazz icon Miles Davis. An art show held by the brand in San Francisco paid tribute to the life of Pablo Ramirez and featured works from artists including Mark Gonzales and Ed Templeton, whilst recent HUF Worldwide edits include their ‘HUF Houston’ and ‘SF Rough Cut’ release from September ‘21.
