Carhartt WIP x Civilist
A creative capsule collection that captures the expressive nature of skate and street-centric styling, the SU21 Carhartt WIP x Civilist collaboration celebrates psychedelic reference, classic cut-and-sew character and a shared European narrative through an unparalleled contemporary lens. With both parties famed for their influential aesthetic and their think-outside-the-box mindsets, Carhartt and Civilist combine to honour Berlin’s Staatliches Bauhaus legacy in a unique and ungoverned form.
Known for their art gallery ties and their culture-focused ethic, Alex Flach and Andreas Hesse’s Civilist is an independent brand and Brunnenstrasse-based store that remains unrestricted by the contemporary market. Pairing odes to Berlin’s historical skate scene with an admiration for the city’s post ‘89 acid-house club and fringe culture roots, Civilist’s subversive narrative is one that hones in on throwback and abstract appeal at its core. Collaborations with the likes of Nike SB on the thermochromic Dunk Low Pro and Converse on the East meets West One Star Pro and Chuck Taylor All Star Pro from 2017 showcase the brand’s enigmatic design style and admiration for ideational inventiveness, whilst their streetwise persona keeps them well tuned in to the demands of contemporary necessity.
Following on from their own recent collaborations with the likes of Converse, Paris’ L’Art de L’Automobile and GORE-TEX, workwear pioneers Carhartt WIP continue to conquer the contemporary market with their ‘honest value for an honest dollar’ approach to design. Merging well with 2009-founded Civilist to capture a distinct narrative influenced by classic cut-and-sew design, Carhartt’s hallmark of industrial charm is a trait that has continued to inspire many like minded individuals since the brand’s original inception in 1889. A firm favourite of the street and skatewear market since ‘94, the brand’s notorious eclectic energy is one that repeatedly finds itself well placed when paired with exclusive custom artwork and cross cultural influence.
Tapping into Berlin’s alternative art scene and the temperament of experimental projects, interdisciplinary ideas and open minded aesthetics, the Carhartt WIP x Civilist capsule collection addresses the warmer months of the year with a spritely underpinning well suited to warm weathered ventures. Inspired by traditional work shirt blueprints the loose fitting and garment washed gradient Allover Pocket Shirt features a hallucinogenic repeated pill-like print across the entirety of its design, whilst its neutral toned Logo Pocket Shirt sibling is crafted from the same 100% organic cotton yet is styled with direct graphic embroidery across both the front pocket and on the reverse for elevated texture. New season Carhartt x Civilist tees such as the 175gsm Civilist Logo T-Shirt offers a playful mirrored-smile twist on an all season classic, whilst the inventive Script T-Shirt delivers a creative take on a time honoured, logo-led Carhartt staple.
For colder weather settings, the long sleeve Carhartt x Civilist Logo Hoodie is a revised sportswear staple styled with a heavyweight 13oz composure and expressive tri-tone embroidery, whilst the ‘Dearborn’ organic cotton canvas Single Knee Pants pair Carhartt’s ode to utilitarian tradition with Civilist’s unrestrained, graphic-orientated design style. Repeated C-motif smiley faces in shades of white, red, blue and green honour both the collection’s psychedelic undertone and both parties’ unconfined visionary direction, whilst the silhouette’s regular waisted and triple stitched composure is designed to handle any taxing schedule without compromising on cut, craftsmanship or character. The same trippy decal is also styled across the practical and aptly named Smile Allover Print Neck Pouch, supplying ample stash space to suit any on-the-go city or skate led setting.
