Adidas Rider Series: Blondey McCoy Superstar 80's
The latest adidas Rider Series design looks to London native Blondey McCoy who much like the projects last focus Chewy Cannon, owes a lot to Southbank for an early education in life, skateboarding and how far hard work can get you. At only 22 years of age Blondey has accumulated an extensive list of collaborations, achievements and life stories which stretch across the realms of high fashion, skate and design as a natural extension to all that he’s interested in. Pinpointing skateboarding as the key to unlocking everything he’s ever cared about, his design for the adidas Superstar captures the perfect balance between fashion, function and skateboarding.
Arriving within a neat two-drawer blue box decorated with signature adidas trefoil branding three pairs of London themed socks accompany each pair of the adidas Superstar 80's 'Blondey' Shoes which allow for personal customisation during everyday wear. Believing that we shouldn’t limit ourselves to one world but instead create our own; the clear TPU uppers allow for a variety of looks whilst signature side stripes have been applied using black vegan leather with perforated holes in between. As a signature detail of the Superstar which was originally released as a basketball shoe in 1969, the rubber shell toe piece remains in a shade of brown and leads into the sticky gum rubber outsole that widens at the heel. A white synthetic leather eyestay holds white cotton laces in place above a flexible tongue which features a ‘the brand with the three stripes’ logo in blue. On the outer side of the foot metallic gold ‘Blondey’ lettering has been added to signify the pro model. Around the back of the heel the leather moustache provides a base for further trefoil branding in white and is padded on the inside for comfort. Completing the design and providing ample grip for all weather wear, a herringbone tread pattern sits underfoot.
Inspired by football and his own preference of skating in shorts and socks the three sets of socks that arrive with each pair of shoes have different looks across white, blue and red colourways that bring a distinctive look underneath the see-through uppers. Focusing on his home district of Soho the red pair includes ‘Piccadilly’ and ‘Oxford’ lettering, ‘St.Giles’ and ‘Cambridge’ on the blue and ‘Blondey’ and ‘adidas’ across the white. Designed to fold under the knee, wide ribbing wraps around the top edge and curved lines can be seen across all in reference to the River Thames - both the landmark and Blondey’s own clothing label.
Having started developing his own designs aged 15, Blondey McCoy has become known as a skater, artist, streetwear designer and model through his multitude of pursuits and self-assured personality which has captured the attention of Kate Moss for her own talent agency, Burberry, Selfridges and Damien Hirst who he worked with for a collaborative piece for his fifth solo art show. As one of Slam City Skates’ and Palace’s first team riders - which he announced his departure from earlier this year - it was the early exposure to a variety of personalities and lifestyles that shaped Blondey’s vision to launch his own brand ‘Thames’ which blends British skateboard culture with fashion as a natural extension of his own interests. Associated with a collective of UK skaters that have tapped into their own creativity and curiosity by staying true to themselves, ‘Thames’ was rebooted in September after a short hiatus which allowed a stronger focus on skateboarding which has seemingly led to him being selected as the next focus for adidas’ Rider Series. With plans to continue to offer a line of ‘Blondey’ products adorned with original artwork, there’s no doubt that the next decade from Blondey will be far from quiet.
