Joining forces with Sam Bledsoe’s Samborghini for their latest capsule collection, Nike SB seek to channel an inventive sense of abstract appeal across their latest collaborative release. Paying tribute to ‘90s nostalgia, forward thinking graphic design and unrestrained experimentalism, this four part Nike SB x Samborghini collection is one that is inspired by archival ‘90s skatewear fashion and the artist's admiration for edgy, carefree street styling.
Born and raised in Seattle and largely influenced by throwback graffiti nostalgia, Washington State’s carefree street vibe and Harold Hunter’s Zoo York reign from the early ‘90s, artist, designer and founder Sam Bledsoe continues to push the boundaries of modernised styling in the right direction. Self-described as a residential streetwear brand with an impressionable multi-faceted aesthetic to match, Samborghini is an independent t-shirt brand that commemorates music artists and memorabilia in a truly refreshing light. Having collaborated with the likes of Billie Eilish, Macklemore, Migos, Pop Smoke and Pike Street’s 35th North skate shop, 33 year old Sam Bledsoe is no stranger to the creative business, with his original artwork and expressive design style developing tenfold from its humble Instagram-only showcasing days. Host to an aesthetic saturated with pop-culture references and tongue-in-cheek wordplays, Bledsoe’s Samborghini remains forever-inspired by skate culture’s edgy, nonchalant and always-one-step-ahead vibe.
Styled with subtle reference to after dark graffiti etchings, the Nike SB x Samborghini collection turns its attention to crystallised colourings and feline catlike creativity for its selection of street and skate friendly apparel, as well as its take on team rider Nyjah Huston’s 360-degree Nyjah Free 2 Premium.
With traditional sporting function very much in mind, the insulative Nike SB x Samborghini Hoodie is a relaxed silhouette, with its midweight, fleece brushed finish and custom panther print a tribute to its collaborative composition. For admirers of the scrawled street art design, the Nike SB x Samborghini T-Shirt offers a more relaxed interpretation that’s well suited to everyday wear, with the same fang toothed Swoosh design printed across its commemorative ‘Nike SB x Samborghini’ chest. Perfect for warmer weathered settings, the Nike SB x Samborghini CL99 Trucker Cap boasts a semi-mesh 5 panel design inspired by the OG Classic 99 snapback profile and styled with the same crystalised ‘Nike SB’ branding as on its frosty toned collection counterparts.
Roping in Nyjah Huston as a fellow collaborator in the collection, the Nike SB x Samborghini Nyjah Free 2 Premium receives a light photo blue update that draws inspiration not only from its fellow stylings but from an original ‘regal blue’ colourway of Nike Sportswear’s OG Zoom Spiridon that released back in ‘97. Loyal to Huston’s second generation design, this creative reinterpretation of the Nyjah Free 2 Premium is styled with reinforced rubber uppers and ventilated mesh underlays, whilst the ombre effect blue panelling is styled with reference to the collection’s frosty blue, after dark undertone. A contoured rubber outsole is designed to flex and fold to suit the demands of any applied setting, with the internal ¾ socklike bootie a complement to the cushioned foam sockliner in its ability to provide a softened day on day wear. Reflective trims across the performative ghillie-loop lacing system cater to dimly lit excursions with ease, whilst the metallic 3D styled sidewall Swooshes adhere to the metalized undertone associated with the collection’s aesthetic. Classic ‘Nyjah’ and ‘II’ embroidered branding decorates both the tongue and heel pulls, whilst the miniature embossed Swoosh across the rubberised toe cap is mirrored by the commemorative ‘Nike SB’ and ‘Samborghini’ red print branding seen across each mirrored lateral quarter.
