Vans x Quasi Crockett High Pro
A triple-layer collaboration that sees fun-loving Gilbert Crockett’s signature profile re-imagined by Chad Bowers’ Quasi and all-out skatewear powerhouse Vans, these progressive Crockett High Pros strike the perfect contemporary balance between skate specificity and reliable utilitarian function. Led by distinctive military undertones and by each parties admiration for performance-focused aesthetics, these polar-opposite sneakers are designed to catch the attention of any modern-day skater looking to hone in on something with a heightened sense of vintage appeal and enduring everyday purpose.
Famed for his admired ‘do your own thing’ attitude and for directing fresh-faced Quasi towards a more agnostic-inspired approach to aesthetics, free-spirited Ohioan Chad Bowers continues to grace the skate scene with a presence that stems from his early Alien Workshop days in Dayton. Founding Quasi in 2015, and originally dubbed Mother Collective, Bowers linked up with skaters and former Alien Workshop crew members Tyler Bledsoe, Jake Johnson and Gilbert Crockett to establish a company that was free from logo-specific constraints, and instead was inspired by skate’s natural cultural progression and its abstract appreciation for against-the-grain graphics and trims.
With Crockett forming the insatiable bond between Vans and Quasi, a fast paced team-rider for both companies, there’s no real surprise as to why Crockett’s signature silhouettes remain a key cornerstone for both skatewear brands. Appearing alongside fellow Vans associate Justin Henry in Quasi’s 2018 ‘Mother’ short-form, Crockett began his time with the Anaheim skate crew back in 2009, going on to turn pro just three years later. His signature silhouette and modest Southern charm has been the focal point of numerous colourway adaptations and reinterpretations over the past decade, with Quasi initially tapping into front-man Crockett’s famous profiling back in 2017 with the collaborative release of the ArcAd Gilbert Crockett Pro 2 sneakers. Just a year later, Quasi and Vans returned with yet another creative collaboration that set about celebrating ‘original retro athletic aesthetic’ through the re-imagined release of the once-forgotten Epoch Sport Pro.
Fast forward to 2020, and the much-loved Crockett High Pro silhouette returns in a two-part colourway collection inspired by old-school workwear aesthetics and classic blue-collar charm. With both an antique green and a true white profile available here at Flatspot, both Quasi and Vans demonstrate their undeniable ability to let performance-enhanced features and no-nonsense construction methods speak for themselves. Both profiles are styled with DURACAP reinforced suede and cotton-canvas uppers, with the antique-green pair opting for overlaying shades of midnight black and the true white counterpart turning to more neutral hues of creamy white to evoke a dichotomous mirroring inspired by contemporary desire. An UltraCushHD sockliner pairs neatly with Vans’ iconic Wafflecup sole and go-to vulcanised construction methods to honour both the OG Crockett profile but both brand’s commitment to innovative impact resiliency. Crisp white bartack stitching across the midfoot and side-wall stripes mimics that seen across the previously released black-on-black pair from earlier this year, whilst the interior-facing dual metallic eyelets across both profiles remains loyal to the design’s ode to exemplary circulatory comfort. The statement ‘Gilbert Crockett x Vans’ tongue tab is secured against the arch of the foot through either a jet black or stark white recessed 7-eyelet lacing system, depending on which design is chosen, whilst commemorative ‘Quasi’ embroidered heel-strip detailing signs these ‘Off The Wall’ heel-stamped sneakers off in either bold black on the teal toned variant or in a shade of ‘surf the web’ blue on the clean lined white option.
Joining the likes of hardwear giant Independent, LA-based Lotties Skate Shop, Jerry Hsu’s Sci-Fi Fantasy and FA sibling brand Hockey, Quasi pairs with Paul Van Doren’s Vans to deliver yet another game-changing collection inspired by skate’s rawest desires. Letting craftsmanship and creative vision guide the design, these vulcanised rewrites of doubled-up team rider Gilbert Crockett’s famed high-top profile offer the very best in boardfeel and buoyant character, all backed by subtly boisterous odes to memorable ‘90s skate culture.
