Vans x Flatspot Civic Jam 004

As the first joint event of the year, on Saturday 22nd of February Flatspot joined forces with Vans to create a memorable day of skating, photography and prizes in celebration of the launch of team rider Rowan Zorilla’s first pro shoe - the appropriately named Vans Rowan Pro Shoe - which was officially released on 15th February 2020. Whilst we’ve collaborated with Vans in the past for events such as the National Skate Co. x Vans x Vague Mag x Flatspot Civic Jam last summer, it was clear this event needed to be truly special. After we were offered an opportunity we couldn’t turn down in the way of event space, we knew this would be something that the Plymouth scene would be really hyped for.

It’s common knowledge that the grounds outside the old Civic Centre building has been the central hub for the Plymouth skateboarding scene since the late 80’s and it’s been our go-to spot for any sponsored Flatspot Jam events over the last year. With an amazing turn out every time, we set out to use a lesser known but equally as important space for the Rowan Pro Shoe Launch - the basement inside the Civic building itself.

Thanks to the guys at Vans who organized a crew to come down and completely transform the abandoned basement into a rad venue for the day, the set up included a pop-up skate park, a Rowan product viewing area and a photo exhibition area set up by the guys at @_nosoapradio and @_thecivic which included contributions from local creatives who shared their experiences of skating in the southwest and portraits of familiar faces from Plymouth and the surrounding area.

Kicking off at 2pm on Saturday, the basement was packed from start to finish with Vans dishing out cash and product throughout the evening for the best tricks and music was provided by Rupert Callard, Mike Kedjanym, Cam Loki-Ash, Harry, Ellis Bruce and Jasper Golding. As an added bonus, exclusive Flatspot x Vans Civic Jam t-shirts and hoodies designed by Nick Adams (@neekone) were on sale throughout the evening with all proceeds going to the @shuvitcancer campaign set up by Elaine Shallcross. After being diagnosed with breast cancer at age 68 Elaine aims to raise money and awareness for others with the disease and has set out to land a Shuvit on July 10th, the date of her 69th birthday.

For a look at what went down on the evening take a look at our video which features Cam Ash, Elliot Jago, Steve Attfield, Sam Gosling, Jack Gorham and more.

Big ups to everyone at Vans who made this event happen and to everyone who turned up on the day and played a part in making this the best event we have put on yet!
