Polar SP21: Collection Overview
Sticking to their Euro-centric MO for yet another season, Polar’s latest S21 release arrives at Flatspot to complement the unpredictable change in climate. Geared up and ready for the switch into the spring and summer months, we’ve highlighted a handful of our favourite Polar Skate Co. S21 must-haves that mediate the brand’s individualistic persona with respect to the necessities of the coming months.
Reworked archive favourites and new-season Polar clothing such as long sleeve tees and shirts provide insulative comfort in line with SP21 collegiate trends, with subtle odes to ‘80s preppy-style workwear aesthetics retained through the Malmö-based brand’s admiration for plaid-sewn profiles. Despite a full-year in lockdown, leisurely WFH wardrobe essentials such as Polar hoodies and matching tracksuits mark their timely return to offer a repurposed take on an all-season sportswear preference. Continued on from AW20, refined fabrics such as velour, cord and herringbone-jacquard adhere to the brand’s un-processed European narrative, with Polar Surf Pants, Polar Big Boy Jeans and Polar 93 Denim actively retaining their ode to ‘90s era skateboarding culture.
Known for their monochrome custom prints assigned to the likes of artist Ryan Mettz and legendary brand-founder Pontus Alv, the Polar Notre Dame Fill Logo T-Shirt is another exclusive design that pays tribute to the brand’s revolutionary design style. Featuring photography shot by team-rider Paul Grund in 2019, on the day of the historical Notre-Dame de Paris fire, this expressive tee brings a whole new layer of dispositional depth to the brand’s internationally recognised circular-stroke design. Following in the footsteps of past-season favourites such as Tynan Kerr’s Moth House Fill Logo T-Shirt and the hot-topic ACAB Fill Logo design, Polar t-shirts have become widely known for their simplified yet significant styling.
A returning go-to layer of midweight 350gsm insulative warmth, the Polar 3 Tone Fill Logo Hoodie merges #stayhome leisurely function with time-honoured skate specific purpose. An all-season staple reworked for SS21 in a bold shade of black and tailored to a wide fit for increased mobility, this soft-brushed cotton hoodie offers a burgundy, white and washed-blue twist to a screen-printed silhouette that’s been mindfully-manufactured in Portugal in keeping with the brand’s European ties.
A sport-grey variant of AW20’s debuting Torsten Track Pant and Track Jacket honours the past year’s relaxed work-from-home vibe with respect to nostalgic skate-scene aesthetics, with the rising tracksuit combo trend finding itself a mainstay and favourite of other European brands such as by Parra and Yardsale too. Heavyweight 430gsm cotton ensures a durable and heat-retaining wear, whilst the classic pleated detailings and gym-school inspired characteristics offer a youthful spin on its block-tone silhouette. Loyal to the subtle ‘70s collegiate undertone, the Jacques Long Sleeve Polo Shirt pairs archival-inspired herringbone jacquard with a more earthy, vertically-striped colour palette for SP21.
For appreciatives of checkered stylings and heritage workwear, the new-season Polar Flannel Shirts in shades of washed grey-scale black and dusky-orange are ideal for layering on top of tees and Polar shirts such as the Polar Shin Turtleneck Long Sleeve T-Shirt or returning favourites such as the Polar Team T-Shirt, whilst the tailored high-low hemline, button-down cuffs and the double-up chest pockets bring a distinctive sense of utilitarianism to a design well-suited to the demands of the warmer months.
A complement to Paul Grund’s Notre Dame tee and the continuation of signature decks from the likes of team-riders such as Dancer’s Hjalte Halberg and Oskar Rozenburg, the Polar Sequence Art Shirt welcomes a mischievous sense of individualized character to a self-portrait captured by the legendary Dane Brady. Its monochrome checkerboard aesthetics taps into throwback polaroid-trends and West Coast surf-scene undertones, whilst its breathable and well-ventilated 100% viscous construction bodes well with its oversized free-flow fitting to provide a statement day-on-day wear across the spring months.
The Polar Skate Co. S21 collection will be available online at Flatspot on Friday 16th April at 10:00AM (BST).
