Supported by albums including their self-titled release from 2013 and by their ‘RTJ4’ album from 2020, Run The Jewels’ influential legacy is one continually enriched by Killer Mike and Brooklyn based producer El-P’s hold on the industry. Although both are well known for their individual careers that began during the ‘90s and early ‘00s, their collaboration on the track ‘Tougher Colder Killer’ and El-P’s ‘Cancer 4 Cure’ album ultimately led to the two artists joining forces to create Run The Jewels. Named after a line in LL Cool J’s ‘Cheesy Rat Blues’ with reference to New York stick-up slang, lyrical inspiration for RTJ continues to stem from an appreciation for socio-political topics, their Adult Swim ties and from their own veteran rap statuses.
Following on from the likes of the Nike SB MF Doom Dunk High, the Nike SB ‘De La Soul’ Dunk Low Pro and the Nike SB ‘Dinosaur Jr’ Dunk High Premium from 2007, the Nike SB x Run The Jewels capsule combines influential music culture with an appreciation for creative design. Part of Nike’s on-going 4/20 saga, this two part Dunk collection combines rap music legacy with creative 4/20 insignia to feature exclusive commemorative details beneath each insole; 4.20.10 ‘Jaimily’ in honour of El-P’s wedding anniversary and 4.20.75 in reference to Killer Mike’s birthday.
Styled in a subtle Miami Vice-like colourway with an icy blue outsole and ‘Blue Chill’ uppers made from both suede and nubuck, the Nike SB x Run The Jewels Dunk Low delivers a creative take on the court classic. Featuring interchangeable braided laces, a perforated toe box, a full length cupsole stitch and a circular underfoot tread, this co-designed Dunk Low also features an all-over ‘Run The Jewels’ outsole print. Pink suede Swooshes detail each panelled midfoot, whilst each suede Zoom Air insole features printed finger-gun and fist RTJ logos. Finished with a padded leather tongue, woven ‘Nike SB Dunk Low Pro’ tags and with gold stitch embroidered ‘Nike’ branding sewn across each leather heel.
Much like the Dunk Low, the Nike SB x Run The Jewels Dunk High taps into the super-duo’s expressive undertone to feature black leather underlays with shaggy faux fur uppers styled in a contrasting shade of ‘Active Pink’. 3D gem-style Swooshes honour the duo’s namesake, whilst their finger-gun and fist logos are honoured across each swap-out lace dubrae. Featuring perforated forefoot detailing, interchangeable laces, a full length cupstole stitch and a solid pink rubber outsole, this Dunk High also features Zoom Air inserts and a padded high-cut collar. Finished with a padded suede lining, printed suede insoles and with classic woven ‘Nike SB Dunk High’ tongue labels.
