Nike SB x Instant Dunk Low Pro QS 2
An exclusive quickstrike anniversary collaboration that celebrates Japanese retailer Instant Skateboard’s 25th year in the game, these blue hero, black and pale ivory Nike SB x Instant Dunk Low Pro QS 2 shoes jump on board with the current dunk trend to deliver a truly unique profile rich with colour, character and references to Japan’s symbolic Hachikō dog legacy. A pairing that follows in the footsteps of Nike SB’s iconic Orange Label Collection when it comes to celebrating ‘small-name’ establishments and independent businesses, Nike SB and Instant Skateboards strike up the perfect silhouette that honours both Japanese culture and out-the-box sportswear creativity.
Founded in 1995 with five well-dispersed stores scattered across their Tokyo-based locale, Instant Skateboards is an experienced and iconic company dedicated to providing skaters of all abilities with a safe-space to shop, discuss hot-topics and to share favoured skating spots. Home also to professional riders such as Hirotaka Akakuma, Shinsuke Watanabe Kotatsu and Kei Okada, Instant Skateboards, although small in stature, host a well-placed footing in the Japanese skate community thanks to home-grown short-forms such as their 2015 released ‘Yuto Horigome’ and ‘Yasufumi Konishi’ edits, whilst their notable collaboration with USA-based Wahoo’s Fish Taco in 2018 has helped them tap into a more Westernised market over the past few years.
Backed by their Tokyo Rawthentic release and their latest sashiko, woodblock and anime-inspired Orange Label Dunk High Pro and Dunk Low Premium ‘Sashiko’ sneakers, these highly anticipated Nike SB Dunk Low Pros continue to honour the brand’s appreciation for Japanese culture well into the autumn months. A legacy that dates back to 1924, Hachikō was the canine companion of Tokyo Imperial University lecturer Professor Hidesaburo Ueno who waited patiently for his owners' return at the Shibuya Station each and every day. Following Ueno’s untimely passing, Hachikō frequented the station for a further decade in search of his beloved owner and has since become a notable icon in Japanese culture. Turning to the story of loyal canine-companion for inspiration, Tokyo-based Instant Skateboards condenses the notion of loyalty and symbolic fortune through the release of a fuss-free profile built for everyday purpose. Premium-quality construction represents the celebrated dog’s notorious longevity, whilst the silhouettes authentic character pays homage to the Akita’s trouble-free and loyal persona.
A quickstrike sneaker that hosts subtle similarities to the 2019 released Jeff Staple-designed Dunk Low Pro OG ‘Panda Pigeon’ and the ‘Raygun Tie-Dye’ Dunk Low Pro from late last year with its embroidered lateral trims and bold block-tone colourings, these tri-tone Dunk Low Pro QS 2s remain forever-loyal to their court-side roots thanks to their chunky off-white rubber cupsole and jet-black rubber outsole. Traction-minded circular tread details with a performance-minded pivot circle maintains the profile’s basketball heritage, whilst the impact-reducing Zoom Air Unit in the heel ensures comfort is adhered to from first wear. Traditional toe-box perforations are complemented by 3M reflective silver overlays and a miniature neon-blue Swoosh for a striking after-dark vibe, whilst the puffy and interchangeable ‘Instant’ branded laces secure the neutral-toned nubuck toe overlay and recessed eyelet lacing system across the OG padded tongue. Crisp leather swoop-back Swooshes decorate the textured sky-blue leather quarter panels in profile-matching shades of black, whilst the single neon-yellow shadow-line stitching flows with the design around the rear to accentuate its stitch-stacked ‘Nike’ embroidered fabric heel collar. A custom ‘Nike SB x Instant Skateboards’ tongue tab is displayed in regal shades of gold, blue, black and red for a retro-inspired finish, whilst the embroidered Hachikō dog and crossbones/crosstrucks motif pays active homage to the Shibuya Station’s canine companion and the foretold values of symbolic Japanese culture. Custom ‘Instant Tokyo MMXX’ insoles feature photo-illustrative curbside details with crisp-white ‘Nike SB Zoom Air’ branding and canine-character drain-cover detailings.
Celebrating their collaborative and playfully titled ‘Do You Skate?’ 25th anniversary collection with the likes of artists such as Diskah, Sense and Ruji Kamiyama and even through the recent opening of their Shibuya Store, Instant Skateboards continues its legacy well into 2020. Pairing with Nike SB for an exclusive and highly unique quickstrike release, both parties continue to demonstrate the importance of promoting independent businesses in line with contemporary skate desire.
