Nike SB x Grateful Dead Dunk Low Pros

An eagerly awaited collaboration between Nike and famed free-spirited band the Grateful Dead, these neon-trimmed Nike SB x Grateful Dead Dunk Low Pro sneakers actively bring to life the band’s iconic album-fronting Dancing Bear ambassadors in a playful and highly energised manner. With two character-specific colourways available here at Flatspot, either Opti Yellow / Blue Fury or a Green Spark / Soar pairing, these unrivalled Dunk Low sneakers effortlessly set about celebrating one of the greatest psych-rock albums of all time with their trippy fur-like trims.

Inspired by the legendary Dancing Bear artwork designed by artist Bob Thomas, which appeared across the cover of the band’s 1973 ‘History Of’ LP album, these signature skate shoes also pay homage to Nike’s deep-set archive by actively re-surfacing favoured elements from their 2006 ‘Three Bears’ pack. Inspired by an admiration for fun-loving folklore, the Three Bears pack hosted a triptych Goldilocks theme that fused bright pops of colour with multi-textured decals for added depth and character-specific definition. From which, three unique Nike SB Dunks were dropped, the ‘Baby Bear’ Dunk Lows, the ‘Mama Bear’ Dunk Mids and the hot-house ‘Papa Bear’ Dunk Highs - all embracing the fleecy undertone that has since seen its revival in these band-commemorative Dunk Low Pros.

Similar to the recently released ice-cream themed Nike SB x Ben & Jerry’s ‘Chunky Dunky’ Dunk Low Pro’s and the classic Skunk Dunks from 2010, these textured skate shoes welcome a folklore-inspired twist to a highly popular profile. Single colour fuzzy faux fur uppers, brushed suede overlays and jagged-edge midfoot Swooshes honour each bear’s jester-like collar, whilst the zip-fastened stash pocket inside the padded OG mesh tongue host their own novelty reference to the Cali-based band’s 420-friendly ethos. Colour-matched stitching is used across the design to help curate a more streamlined characterised persona, whilst the addition of lightning bolt lace tips, a cushioned-foam sockliner, custom insoles and Nike’s iconic Zoom Air unit in the heel help make these classic sneakers well suited to any skate or street lifestyle. Depending on which colourway you opt for, a co-branded custom-character brand patch is woven across the tongue, while neat and lighthearted ‘nike’ embroidery across the ankle tab seals these DeadHead Dunks off modestly.

Sticking to their ‘Don’t be afraid to be yourself’ motto, The Grateful Dead have welcomed a number of creative collaborations to their name over the past few years, with both 2019 and 2020 harbouring exclusive releases with the likes of Japanese ‘art toy’ powerhouse Bearbrick and as part of industry-newcomer Mountainsmith’s latest capsule collection. Known for their ballsy attitude and their notorious ability to overhaul any subcultural status-quo, the Grateful Dead once again continue to demonstrate just how powerful their legacy is in the shape of these bear-inspired Nike SB x Grateful Dead Dunk Low Pros.
