Nike SB x Civilist Dunk Low Pro QS
Letting thermal technology and heat-responsiveness guide its design, these game-changing Dunk Low Pro QS Shoes from Nike SB and community-focused Civilist are distinctly inspired by Berlin’s reclaimed ‘90s rave culture and the celebratory notion of creative self-expression. Opting for a revered court-side profile to host its abstract venture, these impressive low-profile skate shoes pay subtle reference to Nike’s 2013 released Air Force 1 and Air Foamposite Weatherman Pack with their heat-mapped design, whilst the silhouette’s trippy transformation celebrates Nike ingenuity and Civilist obscurity at its finest.
Having paired with Nike SB before in both 2013 and 2015 to debut their River Spree Pack and the Neue Nationalgalerie inspired Dunk High Premium, Civilist are no strangers to the collaborative game, working with Vans, Converse and Stussy to produce exclusive collections inspired by their Berlin-based locale and the surrounding cultural communities they serve. Founded in 2009 by visionary creatives Andreas Hesse and Alex Flach, Civilist continues to build endless rapport with the street and skate scene thanks to their no-nonsense vibe and their appreciation for both historical and contemporary art-culture, a trait that continues to raise its head across each and every seasonal collection. Inspired by the old-school raver culture that came about after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1991, these unrivalled shoes pair post-division celebratory character with a never-ending appreciation for the centralised Mitte District’s ebbing scene and colourful multi-cultural presence. Following in the footsteps of similarly released designs such as Nike’s ‘create your own’ Tear Away Air Force 1’s and all-time favourite Converse’s UV-ink-activated Chuck 70’s, crafted in collaboration with Los Angeles based streetwear brand Chinatown Market, Civilist yet again let artistic direction fuel their passion for performance-enhanced apparel, whilst their commitment to the scene and their uncanny ability to think out of the box remains forever clear-sighted.
Despite its dormant all-black appearance, these thermochromic Dunk Low Pro QS shoes host a multicoloured canvas hidden discreetly below the surface. Activated when reaching a temperature of 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius), these heat-reactive sneakers transform to display pops of thermal-insulative colour in shades of blue, green, red and ambient yellow. A profile backed by a ‘create your own story’ ethos, these heat-mapped skate shoes remain ever-loyal to the Dunk Low basketball heritage by ensuring the full cupsole stitch, crisp-white midsole and jet-black rubber outsole adhere to tradition. Forefoot pivot circles maintain multi-directional traction across any encountered terrain, whilst the angled toe-box perforations help boost the design’s internal circulation during its warm-weathered transformation. A cushioned Zoom Air unit and comfort-minded sockliner delivers a greater sense of impact resiliency and reinforced structural integrity, whilst the minimalist ‘Civilist’ Swoosh-seam tab and the pixel-Swoosh embroidered ‘Nike SB’ puffy tongue pay homage to the brand’s ‘less is more’ ‘90s themed vibe. Four different sets of laces complement the design in shades of red, blue, yellow and black - a feature that supports the design’s commitment to personal interpretation. Custom smiley-face insoles and iconic ‘Nike’ branded detailing across the ankle collar’s seal the design, whilst its two-in-one composure makes them an ideal choice for both skate and street wear.
An ode to music culture, Berlin’s reclaimed cultural climate and to the nature of highly energised and heat-exerting skate styles, these metamorphosing Nike SB x Civilist Dunk Low Pro QS shoes live up to their timely stature by delivering something wholly unique and all-together personalised to the contemporary market.
