An official collection designed by both Nike SB and the ideational Dutch designer, the Nike SB x Parra Olympic Team Kit release emerges in conjunction with the arrival of the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics, with skate contests due to start July 25th. A kit that’s set to make an appearance at both the skate and park events hosted at Tokyo’s Ariake Urban Sports Park, Nike SB and Piet Parra take skillful inspiration from Japanese ukiyo-e artwork, trending Pantone colour schemes and the patriotic colourways associated with each sponsored nation. When questioned about the underlying inspiration behind each kit’s aesthetic appeal, Nike Design Lead Donavan Harris acknowledges that ‘we don’t skate in a vacuum’, instead we allow for natural landscapes and rolling lines to influence the way in which we plan out our skate style. Loyal to its experimental blueprint, recognisable cityscapes from each nation are paired with classic sport culture reference, with sports such as basketball, baseball, tennis and football all offering spirited cues for the collection’s jerseys, t-shirts and tracksuits.

With the official teams announced last year in anticipation for what now is a postponed debut, skaters and frequent Nike SB collaborators such as Leo Baker, Nyjah Huston and Louie Lopez are set to rep the custom designed kits for the USA, with Japanese team riders such as Yuto Horigome and Ayumu Hirano following in pursuit. The Brazilian skate team showcases the likes of New Balance Numeric 1010 collaborator Tiago Lemos, Letícia Bufoni and Kelvin Hoefler with France welcoming skaters such as Aurélien Giraud and Vincent Milou to its healthy line-up for 2020.

Carrying forward Piet Parra’s admiration for hybrid graphics and bird-like subversions, each of the exclusive Federation Jerseys and Federation T-Shirts feature their own unique avian character that pays tribute to each nation’s national bird alongside subtle nods toward patriotic citations. Crafted from 100% recycled polyester to help eliminate waste and to help provide a comfortable and perforated wear in light of the scorching Tokyo sun, each of the Nike SB x by Parra Federation Kit Jersey’s are short sleeved and styled with each national flag printed accordingly across the collaborative Nike SB branded chest. For Brazil’s profile, odes to the country’s rugged mountains and the coastal city of Rio de Janeiro are showcased through Parra’s abstract design, with France’s jersey paying homage to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Japan’s referencing Tokyo’s Radio Tower and the USA counterpart styled with a West Coast themed vibe. A crane, eagle, toucan and coq gaulois are the represented birds of choice for each nation; each intricately showcased across each team kit offering. For everyday wear, the Nike SB x by Parra Brazil Federation Kit t-shirt honours the aesthetics of the countries ‘Verde e Amarela’ flag across its tropical hued design, with the Nike SB x by Parra France Federation Kit t-shirt styled with France’s iconic Gallic rooster printed across its pocketed profile.

Styled upon the growing appeal of classic workwear and utilitarian design, the Nike SB x by Parra Federation Kit Coveralls for the USA and Japan are host to throwback boilersuit vibes once popularised by the likes of Dickies and Stan Ray. A two part zip and snap popper fastening makes for quick and easy wear, with both the brave blue and bold black profiles styled with the same patriotic undertones as their sports jersey siblings. In keeping with the occasion’s track and field remit, the Nike SB x by Parra Federation Kit Tracksuit combo pairs a crinkle fabric shell jacket and chevron, cuffed leg pants to offer a vintage style vibe that finds itself commonplace within both past and present sports culture. Nationalistic reference and commemorative print branding seal each part of this two piece offering, with its team sport underpinning cementing the collection’s ‘apparel for all’ sense of diversified and unrestricted charm.

Keeping the Land of the Rising Sun’s soaring temperatures and sun-struck gaze at bay, accompanying Federation Kit Caps for Japan, France, Brazil and the USA are also featured. Pairing a 100% polyester 6-panel shell with a 100% cotton flat-bill, each design retains its patriotic association with tonal embroidered eyelets and a custom closure buckle fastening across the rear fashioned with the appropriate printed bird emblem in keeping with tradition. Cut to a crew length fit from Nike’s performative Dri-FIT fabric blend, the absorbent Nike SB x by Parra Federation Kit Socks are designed to bring a splash of colour to any wardrobe, no matter your supported team, skater or sport.
