Nike SB Orange Label Dunk Mid Pro 'Griffey Jr’

Nike SB Orange Label Dunk Mid Pro 'Griffey Jr’ | Flatspot

Celebrated for his ‘natural’ sporting abilities and unique flair that has earned him a place within the Baseball Hall of Fame and a rich twenty-two year career primarily with the Seattle Mariners, Nike SB have paid homage to the legendary George Kenneth Griffey Jr. for their latest Orange Label release. Taking design cues from an original ‘1996 Air Griffey Max 1’ model which was the first design created to highlight the sporting legends achievements, this Nike SB Orange Label Dunk Mid Pro 'Griffey Jr’ release incorporates the same colour tones and similar detailing yet boasts modern skate-ready features and contemporary updates that draw attention to both the player and a favourite Nike SB footwear model.

Known affectionately as ‘The Kid’, Griffey has stood out in history for his impact on Baseball and hus success which has seen him achieve thirteen All-Star Game selections, ten Gold Glove Awards and seven Silver Slugger Award throughout his profession. Before his retirement in 2016, Griffey finished with a .284 batting average, including 2,781 hits, 1,662 runs scored and 1,836 RBI - numbers that have made history and inspire any new hopefuls in their pursuit of greatness. Whilst this release may steer away from a direct focus on skateboarding, it’s clear as to why Nike has chosen to bring attention to the outfielder’s impact upon sport.

Designed as part of the ongoing Orange Label project which sees a selection of the best loved Nike SB footwear models reimagined using premium materials with the input of team riders and key players within the industry, the Nike SB Orange Label Dunk Mid Pro 'Griffey Jr’ has uppers made from black and ‘fresh water’ coloured nubuck which alternates between the toe vamp, side panels and heel. White accents bring a sense of freshness to the design across the lace fastening, decorative embroidery on one side of the toe vamp, large Swoosh tick decoration on either side panel and ‘58’ numeric embellishment on the velcro ankle strap which brings attention to Griffey’s baseball card number. For all-day comfort and support during demanding skate sessions, the tongue and ankle collar are generously padded and a soft fabric lining runs throughout the shoe alongside the sockliner which holds an impact-absorbing Zoom air unit. The rubber outsole has a full cupsole stitch for an impressive level of durability and underfoot the circular tread pattern has been inspired by original Nike Dunk models and incorporates forefoot pivot circles which together ensure reliable multidirectional grip.

Since retiring in 2016 and being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in the same year, Griffey continues to inspire and influence the industry through his extensive list of achievements and attitude towards performance and skill progression. Sitting in tune with Nike’s own ethos towards making history in both design and sports, Griffey gave a memorable speech at his Hall of Fame induction speech by stating “Just because I made it look easy didn’t mean it was.” which is sure to resonate with the extensive international collective of sporting talent supported by Nike.
