Nike SB Orange Label Dunk High Pro PT8

An Orange Label release that celebrates yet another profile inspired by both traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, these block-tone Nike SB Dunk High Pros welcome pops of manga-referenced colour across one of the most iconic sneaker silhouettes of all time. Following on from Nike SB’s Tokyo Rawthentic collection, inspired by the now-postponed 2020 Olympics and heritage-minded techniques such as Sashiko and woodblock printing, Nike SB turns its attention once again to pop-culture and iconography for memorable inspiration.

Playing to manga’s imaginative and highly emotive roots, Nike SB unveils yet another exclusive Orange Label profile inspired by cultural connectedness and a time-honoured ode to tradition. Never ones to shy away from creativity, this isn’t the first time the sporting powerhouse has turned to Japanese philosophy for its muse, with the 2007-released ‘Money Cat Get That Money’ Nike Dunk SB Low sneakers and the follow-up ‘Money Cat Feeling Lucky’ Nike Dunk SB Highs actively capturing all the much-loved charm associated with the famed Maneki Neko ‘beckoning cat’. A symbol of good fortune that’s believed to stem from Japan’s Edo Period, cats are thought to evoke well-timed fortuity and prosperity due to their heightened sense of awareness; backed by an age-old belief that ‘a cat washing its face is a sign that a guest will soon arrive’. A belief that has been actively addressed across popular culture and finds itself deeply-rooted in contemporary assets such as Pokemon, printed media manga and anime, there’s no real surprise as to why Nike SB opted to generate an East meets West aesthetic to host these unique courtside-revived Dunk High Pros.

Maintaining its iconic basketball heritage, the Nike SB Orange Label Dunk High Pro offers the perfect canvas for this highly-anticipated ode to manga. A style that pays homage to feline features with its instantly recognisable block-tone colouring, these high-collar sneakers have been actively redesigned with smooth blue-suede overlays and textured white-leather trims, whilst the interchangeable crisp-red puffy laces and the colour-matched swoop-back leather Swooshes across the side-walls pay homage to the muse’s iconic button nose collar. A split-tone blue and white rubber cupsole remains loyal to the silhouette’s court-side roots, whilst the traction-minded underfoot pivot circle and the pre-installed Zoom Air Unit delivers exemplary comfort and impact resilience from first wear. Perforations complement the crisp-white toe vamp as a manner of boosting the design’s all-round circulatory value, while the 9-eyelet lacing system is secured in place with a bright-yellow lace-stay and matching ‘Nike SB’ tongue-tab that subtly mirrors the cultural hero’s golden bell. A well-cushioned collar delivers premium support across the ankles, while the university-red lining and colour-matched heel-pull remain ever-loyal to Nike’s ode to performance.

Joining other manga-inspired footwear releases from the likes of adidas, Asics, Reebok and Air Jordan, these character-inspired Nike SB Orange Label Dunk High Pros welcome the return of boisterous colour pairings and referential details to the much-loved ‘85 released courtside profile. Joining the Ben & Jerry’s ‘Chunky Dunky’ Dunk Low Pro and the ‘Incredible Hulk’ Cocktail Collection Dunks with their block-tone trims and iconography-inspired muse, these intergenerational sneakers effortlessly epitomise all there is to love about manga and Nike’s unfathomed appreciation for cross-culture memorabilia.
