Nike SB Orange Label Air Trainer I 'Chlorophyll'
The latest Orange Label release for 2020, these archive-revived Nike SB Air Trainer 1s are styled in the original ‘Chlorophyll’ colourway that once welcomed multi-sport versatility into the game back in 1987. Designed by Tinker Hatfield and dubbed a high-performance sneaker that ‘can do it all’, the legendary Air Trainer 1 returns with skate-specificity to deliver exemplary boardfeel and muli-faceted purpose fresh out the box.
Rising to fame thanks to its swift approval from the likes of baseball and football legend Bo Jackson and quick-footed tennis player John McEnroe, the OG Air Trainer 1 was a cross-training profile that arrived well ahead of its time. Designed to complement the rising interest in sporting culture during the ‘80s, the all-purpose silhouette has continued to capture the attention of many like-minded athletes and sporting enthusiasts thanks to its all-in-one composure and its ageless sense of appeal. Getting lost amongst the resurgence of other sporting go-to’s such as the Air Jordan, Air Pegasus and notable Air Max 90, the profile resurfaced in 2012 for a complete throwback honouring that curated a like-for-like replication of its iconic ‘87 colourway, whilst Nike SB’s similarly styled Trainerendor sneaker debuted in 2013 as a low-profile alternative that tapped into the Air Trainer’s legendary cross-sport character, whilst hook-ups with the likes of Stussy and Nike’s all-condition ACG line kept the silhouette relevant.
Following on from the 2019 released Air Trainer 1 collaboration with Pontus Alv’s Polar Skate Co, Nike SB follows in the footsteps of parent-brand Nike as it traverses its way down memory lane to celebrate the famed 1987 profile and accompanying colourway. Styled with brushed suede khaki grey and crisp-white leather uppers, these ‘Chlorophyll’ Air Trainer 1’s remain loyal to their namesake, letting neon-green pops of contemporary colour accentuate tech-led trims across the body and collar. Nike’s new-age Zoom Air midsole replaces the original Air Bladder component to deliver undeniable impact resistance when paired with any energetic skate style, whilst the rubberised cupsole stitched outsole and the time-transcending lateral support switches its gaze from old-school court-based purposes to suit the ebbing needs of any contemporary skate setting. Perforated toe-box detailing is mirrored across both the interior and exterior side-walls for all-angle circulatory value, a feature that remains faithful to both the ‘87 and 2012 variant. Doubled-up fastenings keep security at the forefront of its design, with both a hook-and-loop midfoot closure and a recessed 6-eyelet lacing system above working to keep the padded ‘Nike SB Air Trainer 1’ tongue secured against the natural arch of the foot. Bold black suede Swooshes pair neatly with the colour-matched midfoot underlays beneath the velcro tab-ends, whilst the rib-stitch ¾ length padded collar is signed off with like-for-like embroidered ‘Nike Air’ Swoosh branding across the heel collar in a striking shade of chlorophyll green.
Ranking next to other recently released Orange Label releases such as George Kenneth Griffey Jr’s Dunk Mid Pros and the anime-referencing Dunk High Pros, these commemorative high-collared Air Trainer 1s from Nike SB once again set about celebrating sport culture’s innovative legacy and Nike’s endless ability to always be one step ahead of the game.
