Nike SB Dunk Low Pro 'What The P-Rod'

Coined a prodigal son of Nike SB, the fiercely independent Paul Rodriguez, a.k.a P-Rod commemorates his lengthy 17 year reign as team rider and signature sneaker connoisseur as part of Nike’s infamous ‘What The’ series. Inspired by a handful of his most influential and milestone marking profiles from his illustrious career with the Oregon skate crew, the Nike SB Dunk Low Pro ‘What The P-Rod’ is a mix match representation of the skater’s modest values, experimental styling and passion for flowing outside the lines of mainstream conformity.

Stepping foot into the world of skate when he received his first ever skateboard from his parents at the age of just 12, California born P-Rod has continued to inspire many thanks to his innovative mindset and endless ability to balance tech with function. Scooped up by One Eighteen shop manager Andy Netkin when he was just 14 to ride as a team member for the local West Coast shop, P-Rod is a skater that has continued to blossom ever since, with DNA Skateboards, once Zorlac Skateboards, arriving as his first official company sponsor in 1999 alongside his feature in their ‘Microanalysis’ promo. Further sponsorships for the rapidly maturing skater soon flooded in, with big names such as Kareem Campbell’s City Stars, Rick Howards, Mick Carroll, Megan Baltimore and Spike Jonze’s Girl Skateboards and the relaunched Plan B all cashing in on the skater’s undeniable flair. Born from a desire to own a little bit more of himself, P-Rod went on to establish his own brand Primitive Skateboarding in 2014, the same year he released his eighth signature skate shoe with Nike; the Nike SB P-Rod Citadel.

One of only four Nike athletes to have exceeded eight signature models, the other three being Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, Paul Rodriquez is an undoubted pillar of influence for the Blue Ribbon Sports skate division. Joining the team in 2004, two years after he featured in Transworld Skateboarding’s ‘In Bloom’ edit, and stacking up an impressive ten signature shoes in the time that’s past since, P-Rod’s working relationship with Nike SB has been dubbed a ‘well oiled machine’ thanks to their intertwined stories and both parties’ shared admiration for evolutionary skate culture. Known for his conceptual yet referential releases, such as his Sandy Bodecker referencing Nike SB ‘BO’ P-Rod II High and the 2020 Nike SB ‘P-Rod’ Dunk Hi that paid tribute to his love of boxing and his Mexcian heritage, multi-talented Paul Rodriquez is a skater that pushes the boundaries at every given opportunity. Receiving his very own ‘What The’ model, a unique series inspired by storytelling tributes and colour blocked aesthetics, the Nike SB ‘What The P-Rod’ Dunk Low Pro calls upon a myriad of past P-Rod releases to supply the 36 year old skater with his own custom creation that finds itself well placed next to other mismatched drops such as the series initiating 2007 ‘What The’ Nike SB Dunk Low and the 42 elemented ‘What The’ Doernbecher Nike SB Dunk Hi from 2015.

Host to two different compositions, the Nike SB Dunk Low Pro ‘What The P-Rod’ is a release that proactively honours a handful of the skater’s most cherished designs. Starting with the left sneaker, tributes to the 2005 Air Jordan 1 inspired P-Rod 1 ‘J-Rod’ are displayed via the textured and cracked leather exterior facing eyestays and mudguards, whilst the perforated toe box is styled in a black and gold aesthetic that references the ‘06 P-Rod 1 ‘Stash’ silhouette. Paying respects to the skater’s Mexican heritage, a tri tone rubber outsole is honoured on the left side, with the classic courtside circular tread retained for elevated all terrain functionality. Interchangeable red laces secure the ‘Rodriguez Nike SB’ embroidered tongue across the arch of the foot, whilst the interior facing quarters pair lightly quilted white eyestays with black snakeskin underlays, ostrich styled trims and a brushed suede orange Swoosh as a subtle homage to the Zoom Air Lows from 2004. Across the rear, embroidered ‘Nike’ branding compliments the bright red quilted lining; a retained feature that takes influence from the P-Rod 2 ‘Playstation’ release and is also repeated on its right side counterpart, the same release that inspires the multicoloured gradient external Swoosh. The left side is styled with a custom geometric insole that complements its classic Zoom Air unit cushioned sockliner beneath.

For the right side toe bumper, the monochrome Nike SB ‘BO’ P-Rod II High displays its reference, with both the recent 2020 P-Rod Dunk and the military brown P-Rod 7 inspiring both the internal and external eyestay and mudguard panels. In place of the left side’s golden toe box, the right features a visual composition of the P-Rod 1 ‘Mexican Blanket’ design, with the puffy yellow laces above styled with the same boxing-belt metallic decal as seen on the recent 2020 P-Rod Dunk. A two tone khaki sand rubber outsole offers a striking contrast to the opposing triple toned design, whilst the sky blue quilted lining beneath the black cushioned tongue helps elevate the design with additional layers of comfort. A cracked leather, yellow trimmed black Swoosh can be seen across the exterior quarter, whilst the inner sidewall features both a miniature and outlined Swoosh design for additional textural depth. In opposition to the embroidered collar of the left sneaker, the right is signed off with a stacked rainbow design that features intricate woven ‘Paul Rodrigues’ signature branding in crisp white. The right side is styled with a lime green ‘PR by Nike SB’ insole on top of its mirrored Zoom Air sockliner.
