Nike SB Dunk Low Pro 'Elephant'

Drawing inspiration from Tokyo-based sneaker and streetwear boutique Atmos’ iconic Nike Air Max 1 ‘Elephant’ collaboration from 2007 and its reissued ‘Air Max Day’ 2017 revival, these familiar cracked-leather print Nike SB Dunk Low Pro ‘Elephant’ Shoes, although not an official collaboration, set about celebrating unique aesthetics and Nike SB’s puckish energy when it comes to against-the-grain contemporary colourways.

Yet another release for the relentless 2020 Dunk rosta, these wildlife-minded sneakers pair Nike innovation with the brand’s own self-confessed admiration for out-the-box graphics and statement stylings. Similarly styled to the Nike SB Orange Label Dunk Low Pro ‘Safari’, a profile that comparably sought its own muse from Atmos’ earlier Air Max 1 ‘Safari’ QS drop from 2001 and the ‘Animal Pack 2.0’ drop from 2018, these re-tooled Dunk’s also host striking similarities to the iconic ‘Jumpman’ Air Jordan 3 silhouette with their off-beat fractured leather aesthetic. With a profile-reworked persona, these Nike SB Dunk Low ‘Elephant’ shoes aren’t afraid to pay tribute to creative character in their carrying, while their unreserved animal-print overlays continue to tap into mastermind Tinker Hatfield's undying appreciation for experimental odes to abstract fruition.

Mirroring the AF1’s in true like-for-like fashion, these ‘Atmos Elephant’ Dunk Low Pros take aim at anthropomorphising one of the strongest and spiritually free-minded animals on the planet - a playful spin that returns full circle to mimic Nike’s pioneering legacy and their time-honoured appeal. A carefully formulated combination of brushed nubuck-suede on the quarter-panels and premium-grade medium grey leather combine to construct the split-material uppers, while Nike’s legendary Zoom Air sockliner and revolutionary full-length cupsole stitch ensure exemplary impact protection, boardfeel and structural support regardless of setting. The two-tone rubber outsole gives way to the OG court-side hailing circular underfoot tread for increased traction and multi-directional grip, while the crisp-white perforated toe-box keeps circulatory comfort at the forefront of its creative muse. Designed to imitate the water spouting from an elephant's trunk, the clear-jade toned swoop-back midfoot Swooshes bring a touch of colour to this dusty monochrome design, with the textualised printed leather overlays representing the mammal’s naturally textured sun-marked skin. Interchangeable puffy laces adhere to traditional Dunk Low aesthetics, securing the puffy ‘Nike SB Dunk Low Pro’ branded tongue across the natural arch of the foot, while the colour-matched embroidered ‘Nike’ branding across the semi-circle ankle collar honours both heritage and the brand’s passion for conceptual characterisation.

Letting impressionistic profilings adhere to the notion of ‘speak for itself’ styling, Nike SB turns its attention once more to memorable archive-revived collaborations for contemporary influence. Without detracting from the promise of revered boardfeel, responsiveness and urban appeal, the tributing Nike SB Dunk Low Pro ‘Elephant’ shoes combine with tradition to celebrate old-school basketball stylings, quirky referential details and an ode to the outdoors through one unique and all-together ageless silhouette.
