Nike SB Dunk High 'TV Signal'
A nostalgic tribute to the twilight hours spent flicking the channels for something to watch other than the static SMPTE colour bars of off-air broadcasts, the Nike SB Dunk High ‘TV Signal’ is a sneaker with an illusionary aesthetic and a throwback sense of appeal to match. Bringing the vibrancy of the lenticular lined transmissions to life through its holographic remastering, minus the monotone bleep, these multi tonal Dunks set the record straight when it comes to tuning in to something altogether unique.
In keeping with Nike SB’s passion for performance and experimental expression, the Oregon-based team turns their attention to yesteryear memorabilia with their latest Dunk rosta release. Although still loyal to its OG courtside composure, these ‘no signal’ inspired Dunks host a subtle pop art spin that merges both subversive styling and out-the-box experimentals together. Casting our minds back to the oversized television sets from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, with their chunky casings and oversized buttons, the Nike SB Dunk High ‘TV Signal’ is a design that commemorates both textural depth and technological advancement in its rawest form. Besides its multi-coloured underlay, the profile’s choice use of contrasting textures hosts low key reference to the static haze of old school TV’s and the glossy around-screen housing that kept the centre screen at the forefront of vision.
This wouldn’t be the first time that skate-centric Nike SB have turned to tech for inspiration, with February’s Orange Label Nike SB ‘VX1000’ Dunk Low Pro, the Travis Scott Playstation Dunk Low’s and the Nike SB x Atlas Dunk Low Premium ‘Wolf Grey’ all inspired by technical innovation, the appeal of evolutionary mechanisation and both street and skate culture. Styled with similarity to these ‘TV Signal’ Dunks, the Nike Kobe 11 ‘Television’ from 2016 was a signature release for the late basketball legend that also took inspiration from the monochrome bars of off-air streaming, whilst the colourful lenticular print on these mixed material Dunk High’s host a similar vibe to those showcased on the collaborative Nike SB x Civilist Dunk Low Pro QS with their revealing thermochromic underlayer.
Durable brushed back suede overlays in a bold shade of black complement the crisp white perforated toe box in keeping with the classic Dunk High silhouette, whilst a two tone black and white vulcanised cupsole and outsole provides the Nike SB Dunk High ‘TV Signal’ sneaker with exemplary traction orientated grip regardless of terrain. Referencing the white noise and trademarked colour-bar aesthetic of off-air channels, a textured lenticular print underlay can be seen across the midfoot quarters and high rise collar; a holographic design that’s styled to shift and alter in line with everyday movement with pixelated detailings inspired by the lines of interference on archaic TV sets. A recessed 9 eyelet lacing system is secured through interchangeable laces that fasten the padded ‘Nike SB Dunk High’ mesh tongue across the arch of the foot, whilst the high gloss Swooshes add additional textural tribute to its television set inspired design. An integrated Zoom Air unit across the interior provides increased cushioning and elevated boardfeel to suit, with the custom insoles signing off the thematic design with an extra layer of referential, digitised depth.
