Nike SB Dunk High Pro ‘Vegan’

Nike SB has heeded the call to expand its footwear offering by debuting the first leatherless variation of the iconic Nike SB Dunk High Pro. Constructed from animal-free materials that retain the original level of quality, performance benefits and statement features of previous leather editions, this brand new 2021 vegan edition incorporates an ironic ‘beef and broccoli’ colourway inspired by the famous Chinese dish.

Appealing to anyone following a cruelty-free lifestyle, or who has been awaiting the return of the food themed colour palette since its use on the memorable Nike Air Force 1 model in 2018, the Nike SB Dunk High Pro ‘Vegan’ plays upon strictly non-vegan inspiration with a focus on green and brown tones that are key to the iconic meal. Showing design progression and more refined approach this time around, Nike SB has chosen to focus on one key material for the uppers as opposed to a combination, as seen on the Nike Air Force 1, giving full attention to their decision to utilise a synthetic material that qualifies as 100% vegan.

Following the release of the first ever vegan Nike SB model, the Nike SB Nyjah Free in 2018, a design that made waves not just because of its leather-free status but also through the natural durability benefits achieved by using alternative non-animal derived materials, a greater focus on performance models being reworked with sustainable and vegan certifications is becoming apparent within the latest Nike SB releases. Considered leaders in design innovation and a brand that continually pushes the bar with what is possible within footwear design, Nike strives to achieve the fine balance between practicality, performance and desirability across both their skateboarding focused line and heritage sportswear label.

Favouring a supple premium synthetic leather upper, the Nike SB Dunk High Pro ‘Vegan’ does not contain leather, suede or animal-derived glue. Remaining true to the original Nike SB Dunk High Pro, perforation across the toe panel increases ventilation and works to keep the foot cool during skate sessions whilst above the highly padded mesh tongue is held in place by a fir tone lacing system, complete with a branded woven label above coloured to match the rest of the design. Cut from the same vegan leather, statement Nike Swooshes have been positioned on either side of the foot with tips that meet around the back of the heel where a curved panel encases lines of top stitching, complete with a synthetic loop pull tab above. A signature feature of any Nike SB Dunk, the highly cushioned collar encases the ankle for a high level of support and throughout the inside of the shoe a soft fabric lining runs alongside the sockliner which is equipped with a performance-driven Nike Air Zoom unit. Attached using a durable cupsole stitch technique, the two tone sail and fir rubber outsole widens towards the heel with a circular tread pattern underfoot that includes a forefoot pivot circle for reliable, multidirectional grip.
