Nike SB Dunk High Pro 'Reverse Goldenrod'

Nike SB’s flip-the-script Dunk High Pro ‘Reverse Goldenrod’; a tribute to the OG Varsity Maize colourway and Nike Sportswear’s archived ‘Be True To Your School’ Dunk campaign from 1985.

For fans of the iconic University of Iowa Dunk High that debuted alongside other collegiate counterparts for the likes of the University of Michigan, University of Kentucky, Georgetown, Syracuse, UNLV and St. John’s, the 2021 Nike SB Dunk High Pro ‘Reverse Goldenrod’ undergoes an inverted adaptation that pays creative homage to both its ‘85 foundation and its more recent 2020 1-1 reissue. Initially arriving as part of Nike’s ‘Be True To Your School’ Dunk campaign that featured the courtside classic as the focal point of its College Colors programme, the colour blocked Dunk’s were styled in a team specific colourway that embodied the characteristics of the Corn state’s Iowa Hawkeyes, whilst their ‘Goldenrod’ nickname was, and still is, a testament to the wildflower flourishings that remain commonplace along roadsides and trails throughout the state. Fast forward 14 years and the original black and yellow colourway received a 1999 Dunk High LE ‘BTTYS’ reissue, with the Friends & Family exclusive ‘Wu-Tang Killa Bees’ Nike Dunk High LE from the same year dubbed the rarest and most desired silhouette thanks to its extremely limited run and its association with the rap group’s influential stature.

Joining other timely remasterings such as the recently released Nike SB Dunk Low Pro ‘Classic Green’ inspired by the Boston Celtic colourway, the fellow J-Pack ‘Chicago’ Dunk Low Pros and the colour blocked ‘Court Purple’ from earlier this year, the Nike SB Dunk High Pro ‘Reverse Goldenrod’ is a profile inspired by tradition yet led by the skatewear subdivision’s creative disposition. Styled with premium brushed back suede uppers, with the underlay and overlay colourings switched over in honour of its reversed namesake, the ‘Reverse Goldenrod’ Dunk High Pro features a Zoom Air unit across each insole for added impact absorption, whilst the retained cupsole stitch, circular tread and performative vulcanised construction is designed in honour of the silhouette’s classic courtside ties and its progressive nature. A traction orientated underfoot tread transfers purpose from the courts to concrete, whilst the circulation boosting perforations across each golden yellow toe box is designed to help provide a cooler day on day wear regardless of skate style. Interchangeable puffy laces complement the recessed 9 eyelet central fastening to secure the padded ‘Nike SB Dunk High Pro’ embroidered mesh tongue across the arch of the foot, whilst the swoop back sidewall Swooshes in bold black fuse across the rear for a seamless finish across its padded collar.

A sneaker with a multifaceted heritage assigned to its ‘Varsity Maize’ assignment, the Nike SB Dunk High Pro ‘Reverse Goldenrod’ is a silhouette saturated with archival influence that stems not only from hardcourt traditions, but from the evolutionary East and West Coast hip-hop movement, team sport conventions, wildflower intricacies and the skate-centric subdivision’s passion for unrivalled originality.
