Nike SB Dunk High Pro 'Kebab and Destroy'

Designed in partnership with skater owned and skater operated Color Skates, this latest Nike SB Dunk High release is yet another culinary conception inspired by Nike’s creative courtside legacy and classic Greek cuisine. Paying homage to the iconic gyro kebab with its textured fabrication and referential colouring, this latest food themed collaboration joins the likes of the Nike SB x Ben & Jerry’s ‘Chunky Dunky’ and ‘Street Hawker’ Dunk to breathe a refreshing new twist on an ever-popular skate and basketball silhouette.

Founded in 2008, right in the middle of the Greek economic meltdown, the infamous underground skate shop has since become a communal hub for like minded individuals and skate enthusiasts looking to share in their experiences of Athens’ metropolitan allure and rapidly evolving skate scene. Host to the craziest parties and some of the biggest skateboarding events seen across Greece, Color Skates is famed for their ‘Roadthrill’ skate series in partnership with the likes of Thrasher Magazine, Primitive Skate and The Dubbliner Paros, as well as their fronted ‘Skate and the City’ competition held in the heart of Athens’ Hype Ghetto and their admirable ‘together we have it all’ tagline. Home to the likes of Arthur Kiviliov, Mike Vasilakis and Haris Markou, as well as to collaborations with brands such as the infamous Greek fast food joint Goody's Burger House, there’s no real surprise as to why Color turn their attention once more to culinary delights for their first collaboration with Nike SB.

Following in hot pursuit of the aforementioned Nike SB ‘Chunky Dunky’ and the ‘Street Hawker’ Dunk Low Pro, the Nike SB Dunk High Pro ‘Kebab and Destroy’ joins other cuisine themed releases such as the ‘Chicken and Waffles’ Dunk High from 2016 and David Ortiz’s DQM Air Max 90 ‘Bacon’ in a bid to celebrate stylised sustenance, gastronomic heritage and iconic street food culture in line with Nike SB’s ode to creative innovation and expressive design. With the origins of street food itself embedded deep within ancient Roman culture, the Nike SB ‘Kebab and Destroy’ Dunk comes full circle to celebrate one of the countries most famous dishes, the γύρο (gyro). Meaning ‘turn or revolution’, named with reference to its rotisserie grilled preparation, the gyro is now an international delicacy dubbed the poster child of Greek fast food.

Serving inventive depiction, the Nike SB ‘Kebab and Destroy’ Dunk arrives in a patchwork colourway inspired by each and every integral element that makes up the iconic dish. Brushed suede overlays across the uppers in shades of tan brown and light olive green pay tribute to both the crisp pitta bread casing and the fresh salad filling, whilst the perforated white leather toe box is representative of the refreshing tzatziki drizzle that gives the dish its tangy twist. Bright red Swooshes and interchangeable puffy red laces across the high collared design pay homage to the ripened tomatoes within, whilst the cracked elephant leather heel panels are styled in honour of the chargrilled rotisserie meat that makes up the basis of the gyro. A bold black rubber cupsole features neutral tone stitching and a classic circular underfoot tread, with the integrated Zoom Air unit a testament to courtside tradition and impact absorbent skate necessity. The left sneaker features a multicoloured ‘C’ emblem embroidered across its exterior facing lateral heel that commemorates Color Skates’ part, with the right sneaker detailed with an embroidered ‘kabob’ sewn across the opposing side in realistic culinary shades. The padded mesh tongue is sealed with a ‘Nike SB x Color Skates’ flag label, styled with the same ‘C’ logo trim and ‘Kebab and Destroy’ embroidered detailing across the inside, whilst the illustrative split design insoles feature a gyro themed design and ‘All In’ printed scripture that references the shop’s unrestrained character.

Inspired by both their passion for celebrating unrivalled talent and their innovative #supportyourlocalskateshop Orange Label campaign, Nike SB continue to put smaller independent skate shops on the map through their choice use of collaborative collections. The first for Athens’ Color Skates, this release joins the likes of recent collaborations between Nike SB and other skater owned, skater operated joints such as Daniel Kim’s Stingwater, UAE’s Frame and Japan’s Instant Skateboards.
