New Balance Numeric: Introducing The Tiago 1010
Following up on his recent appointment with the New Balance crew, Brazillian skater Tiago Lemos celebrates his time with the Boston-based brand by dropping his first signature New Balance Numeric shoe: the ‘90s inspired Tiago 1010. A design that honours both the skater’s street-hailing energy and creative prowess, as well as New Balance’s reputation for tech-led details and harnessed performance, the heavily-layered Tiago 1010’s epitomizes classic throwback skate styling at its best.
Joining the likes of the Jamie Foy 306, Brandon Westgate’s 913 and French pro-skater Flo Mirtain’s classic 379, Tiago Lemos celebrates his first anniversary with the brand with a release that tails on the end of his aptly named Plaza TC S drop from 2016 with DC Shoes. A release that promptly matched his part in DC’s “De La Calle/Da Rua” short-form, it’s safe to say that Lemos is no stranger to the game, having similarly appeared in edits such as Thrasher Magazine’s “Crupie Wheels” and their twelve-minute video “Rough Cut” from earlier this year. Growing up in the Sao Paulo municipality of Jaguariúna in Brazil and aged only 29, enigmatic Lemos is a skater that takes no orders and abides by no rules. Not one to shy away from powerful pull-offs and no-nonsense tricks, Tiago began his skateboarding career traversing the streets of Sampa, with his quick-fire footing soon capturing the attention of his very first sponsor, DC Brazil in 2008 after winning an array of local contests. Now a well-known team rider and collaborator with the likes of Independent Trucks and Boulevard Skateboards, an awardee of CemportcentoSKATE Magazine’s Skater of the Year in 2015 and good-friend of Californian skateboard filmmaker Ty Evans, Tiago Lemos continues to cement his success with an undeniable legacy that has yet to come into its own.
A brand new silhouette inspired by its traditional running predecessors and even by the recently released Made in UK 991 series, the New Balance Numeric 1010 is an all-purpose skate shoe built to ensure performance and practical footing. Available here at Flatspot in two unique colourways, an all-black design and a distinctly ‘90s esque white and blue variant, the NM# 1010’s from Tiago Lemos provide a secure lockdown fit without scrimping on cushioning or all-round support. For the white, blue and lemon-yellow pair, a gum-brown articulated multi-density outsole complements the function-focused FuelCell midsole, whilst its resilient, crisp-white suede uppers are paired with puffy, sky-blue mesh trims to help boost the designs structural integrity and overall level of comfort. The molded Ortholite insole provides step-by-step cushioning and premium-quality impact resistance with the reinforced toe cap and padded, zonal-pod collar across the rear helping to lock-in the heel. Innovative FantomFit external structuring can be seen in a contrasting shade of black, with the stark-white side walls, recessed, puffy-white laces and the two-tone embroidered ‘N’ decal across the side helping bring an added layer of depth to the design. Honouring classic throwback skate profiles with their slightly chunkier silhouette and their bold presence, these ‘NB# 1010’ tongue-branded sneakers are perfect for any hard-hitting skate style or laid-back stint around town.
For the after-dark inspired black-on-black pair, all-black pig suede and colour-matched mesh ensures breathability and comfort are adhered to whilst the split-tone icy-grey and gum-brown dual density outsole, the silver-trimmed piping and the jet-black, soft-touch side walls provide a smoother finish than its tri-tone counterpart. The high-rise ankle collar, built-in FantomFit structuring and the puffy, ‘NB# 1010’ branded tongue provides support across the arch of the foot, with the recessed lacing system providing back up where it’s needed the most. Speckled mid-foot bracing delivers an added splash of contemporary character to the design, with the reflective ‘N’ making them well-adapted to any nighttime skate session.
A release backed by the honourable slogan ‘Trust Tiago’, the 1010 are coined New Balance’s most technically advanced skate shoe due to their performance-enhancing trims and their comfort-minded underlays. Combining early ‘00s nostalgia with skate’s ever-demanding desire for quality construction and responsiveness, the Tiago Lemos NM1010s take visionary creativity to a whole new level.
