adidas x Paradigm
Known for their explorative mindset, their print publication roots and their provocative approach toward contemporary design, Theophilos Constantinou’s Paradigm is an independent label with a unique undertone to match. Partnering with adidas on their latest capsule collection titled ‘Life Before’, Constantinous and adidas address environmental responsibility with respect to modern day design, everyday functionality and the ever evolving demands of the changing global landscape.
Following on from recent collaborations with artist Curtis Kulig and poet Max Blagg, and honouring adidas’ ongoing eco-orientated initiatives established in-house, Paradigm’s artistically inclined nature and passion for creative innovation are traits that bode well with adidas’ continued ode to the environment. Inspired by some of the sentimental apparel Manhattan-based Constantinou recalls his father wearing during the ‘70s and by the influential 310-page publication ‘The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming’ written by journalist David Wallace-Wells, adidas and Paradigm’s aptly titled ‘Life Before’ collection focuses on the publication’s view of climate change and how it represents a civilisation of like minded individuals in the market to raise awareness of such environmental dangers and the archaic systems that currently stand in the way of preservational progression. Backed by his own ‘No Dejar Rastro’ publication from 2016, which translates to ‘Leave No Trace’, by his own photographic interests that explore the realms of spirituality, urban decay and the natural world, and by his extensive collection of travel dairies that document his observation of ‘oneness’, open minded Constantinou’s investigative mindset is one that continues to inspire many both inside and outside his Paradigm ties.
With a drive to use 100% recycled polyester in all of their products by 2024 and to be 100% climate neutral by 2050, adidas’ skate-specific Gazelle Adv receives a streamlined and sustainability focused rewrite that honours both parties’ admiration for the environment. Tapping into Paradigm’s artistic undertone, the adidas x Paradigm Gazelle Adv arrives in a two tone black and purple remastering styled with 100% eco-friendly uppers consciously crafted from a blend of synthetic materials and recycled rubber compound. The performative GeoFlex outsole is designed to contain at least 10% recycled rubber, whilst its traction focused geometric tread is styled in a striking block tone shade for additional characterised depth. Tonal ‘adidas Gazelle’ side wall print detailings complement adidas’ traditional 3-Stripe trims for a contemporary take on an archived classic, with the recessed 6 eyelet lacing system keeping the ‘Spread Light, Leave No Trace: Life Before’ collection exclusive embroidered tongue across the natural arch of the foot. A molded heel counter is mirrored by a square edged T-toe cap that is in keeping with the OG Gazelle blueprint, whilst the custom ‘P’ motif Paradigm insoles and the split profile Paradigm and adidas Trefoil print branding across each collar honours the design’s timely capsule collection assignment for 2021.
Similarly crafted from 100% recycled polyester, with both adidas’ Parley Ocean Plastic Primeblue and high performance Primegreen fabrications the materials of choice, the adidas x Paradigm capsule collection also includes a handful of classic sportswear remasterings ultimately inspired by throwback ‘90s aesthetics and odes to Theophilos Constantinou’s childhood. Track-and-field pairings such as the Track Jacket and Track Pant combo pair reference to vintage Beckenbauer design’s from the archives, whilst the streamlined all-black colouring pays subtle reference to a wardrobe duo Theo wore during his high school years. Minimal branding taps into Paradigm’s expressive nature, with classic Trefoil and 3-Stripe trims a testament to adidas’ cross generational lineage.
