adidas x Mark Suciu Gazelle ADV
Focusing on the iconic Gazelle for his latest signature release in partnership with adidas, team rider Mark Suciu follows up on his 2015 adidas Skateboarding Suciu ADV with a collegiate coloured adidas Suciu Gazelle ADV for FW21. Vintage detailing pays creative tribute to the profile’s lengthy lineage, with traditional gold foil commemorative detailing styled in line with other adidas shoes including the similarly styled adidas Matchbreak Super and Samba ADV.
Joining the likes of adidas’ first female skater Nora Vasoncellos’ adidas Nora Gazelle ADV from earlier this year and 15 year team rider Dennis Busenitz’s ongoing collection, the adidas Suciu Gazelle ADV captures the unfiltered charm of team rider Mark Suciu through its clean lined and expressive guise. Coined an ‘outsider’ by adidas Advanced Concepts design director Jean Khalife when referring to the sneaker’s niche appeal in comparison to other favoured silhouettes such as the Stan Smith or Superstar, the Gazelle ADV is a skate-specific revision of its OG soccer and handball-specific sibling that launched back in the late ‘60s. Now styled in an array of archive influenced colourways, including those that reference the profile’s original blue for indoor and red for outdoor sport assignment, the Gazelle’s timeless charm and sport-meets-street depiction is one that undoubtedly captures the contemporary market’s adoration for ageless adidas classics.
Joining the adidas team in 2013, a year before Na-Kel Smith and a year after Lucas Puig, Mark Suciu has continued to inspire many over the course of his ongoing reign. Known for his spots in adidas’ ‘London, Meantime’, his latest ‘Archive_001 Philadelphia’ episode and Alien Workshop sister company Habitat’s ‘Curve’ edit from earlier this month, as well as for his continued adidas Skateboarding Suciu ADV line up that started with a quadruple colourway release back in 2015, the skater’s heralded attitude is one that accurately reflects his energised mindset without compromising on the sport at hand.
Unlike the adidas Skateboarding Suciu ADV’s hailed inspiration from the skater’s own infatuation with Gothic architecture, the adidas Suciu Gazelle ADV turns its attention to time honoured classics as its muse. One of only a small handful to be granted the chance to collaborate on such a revered footwear icon, Suciu remasters the street-meets-skate profile in honour of its traditional court sport narrative. Premium brushed suede uppers are paired with crisp white three-stripe intricacies that complement the tonal Geoflex outsole for a streamlined yet structurally supportive wear, whilst the molded Adiprene sockliner and double layered toe bring increased adidas innovation to the silhouette. Higher foxing and a heightened rear collar keep the foot locked-in through energetic wear, with the recessed 7 eyelet lacing system securing the gold foil ‘adidas Gazelle’ trefoil tongue in place across the natural arch of the foot. Across each exterior facing midfoot, the usual gold foil commemorations honour Suciu’s latest signature release, with the regal gold foil detailing across each collar sealing the design with an added sense of vintage ‘60s era charm and contemporary prowess.
Featuring in adidas’ latest ‘Blue Dog’ release alongside his Verso edit co-collaborator Justin Albert and featuring hot spots such as San Francisco’s Pier 7 and favoured city spots around NYC, the adidas Suciu Gazelle ADV’s characterised charm and allure are an accurate and unarguable reflection of the California born skater’s contained creativity and love for skate.
