Referencing a famous Motown studio nicknamed the ‘Snake Pit’ due to its small size and high number of cables running out of the ceiling, this black 100% cotton t-shirt is a part of a thirteen-piece capsule range designed by Carhartt in celebration of Motown’s 60th anniversary. Designed for casual everyday wear the curved neckline has a flexible ribbed trim which supports comfort and fit retention whilst the body and short sleeves have straight cut hems. On the centre of the chest a brown tone graphic shows an illustrated version of a photograph taken of the Funk Brothers surrounded by stylised text reading ‘Snake Pit Studio A. Carhartt WIP. Motown Rec. U.S.A. 2648 W Grand BLVD Detroit’. The reverse is plain and a collaborative woven label has been added to the inner nape of the neck.
Known for their improvisational skills and musical expertise, the Funk Brothers comprised of six multi talented members who played between 1959 - 1972 and recorded within the renowned ‘Snake Pit’ studio which resulted in a distinctive sound that set their songs apart from other Motown singles of the time. Turning 60 this year, Motown was founded by Berry Gordy Jr in 1959 and is responsible for establishing the likes of Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder whose songs reshaped the sound of American pop music and diversified soundwaves across the world.
