Patagonia clothing company was founded by and is still owned by Yvon Chouinard. Chouinard originally became famous as one of a pioneering crew of climbers in the 1960s crating first ascents on the big walls of Yosemite valley and Alpine mountain climbing around the world. At the time Chouinard created Black Diamond and produced climbing hardware out of a shed in Ventura, California. He began making rugby shirts one season seeing a need in the climbing community at the time. The Patagonia clothing company was born shortly after producing soft goods alongside Black Diamond, its name being inspired by a growing love for the country Patagonia of course but more notably out of a strong connection with the Fitz Roy mountain range in particular. Through the 80s and 90s Patagonia grew its outdoor clothing range and reputation through its unequivocal vision and commitment to quality and the environment in which the Patagonia staff and ambassadors explore, play and work in worldwide. The use of striking world class photography has set the brand apart communicating the wild lifestyles of the athletes that Patagonia promote and support. Today Patagonia produce a comprehensive range of technical clothing, bags and equipment from Gore Tex Alpine shells and Down insulation jackets through to ethically produced organic cotton t shirts presenting artists work and messages they want to promote. Patagonia is now as famous for its style and quality of clothing manufacture as they are their attitude and ethics, tapping into into their rich history and passions to communicate their message and at the same time inspire. Patagonia will now repair any of their garments for free, no questions asked, creating in their path a deeper connection to the clothes we purchase and the things we do whilst wearing them.
