Carhartt: Core Pieces & FW19 Season Updates

Carhartt: Core Pieces & FW19 Season Updates - Flatspot

Continuing to evolve their WIP legacy each season, Carhartt are dedicated to their origins within workwear throughout not only signature pieces such as the Bib Overall or Detroit Jacket but by using heavy-duty construction methods and reliable fabrics that are as recognisable as the designs themselves.

Whilst more experimental styles from the autumn/winter ‘19 collection act as ‘an exercise in eclecticism’ with the use of check and houndstooth patterns alongside real-tree camouflage and robust water-repellent Cordura materials, what remains at the heart of each release are considered, well-structured staples that are striking in their simplicity and act as a base for layering more eccentric statement pieces. We’ve looked to six of the best loved wardrobe staples to highlight what makes them continuous go-to pieces throughout time and the subtle updates made for the colder months ahead.

Whether you’re going for brights this season or looking to refresh your everyday t-shirt, the Chase collection focuses on supplying cotton jersey staples that amplify everyday necessities with premium fabrics and considered details. Cut to a loose fit with a curved neckline for ease of layering throughout the colder months, 235 g/m² combed cotton single jersey has been selected for its durability, softness and elasticity at a go-to weight that remains in use throughout the year. Selected for its longevity and enhanced by a variety of colourways, a rich colza tone brings a bright burst of yellow against otherwise muted shades seen across the season. Subtle but still certifying that high level of quality, the Carhartt ‘C’ logo has been embroidered in metallic gold thread on the left side of the chest.

Striped t-shirts are unlikely to ever cease, so there’s plenty of reason to experiment with colours and variations each season. Whilst it’s one thing to design a simple monochrome or two tone design, it’s another to recreate this staple piece with a noticeable focus on quality and fabric, which is what Carhartt WIP achieve every time. Taking a step away from the more subdued tones commonly used by other brands for AW19, the Carhartt Flint Stripe T-Shirt has been yarn dyed for a deep finish across its regular fit cut. A variety of widths accentuate a repeat horizontal stripe pattern coloured in varying shades of cobalt blue, yellow, black and white with a subtle pop of green. The curved neckline has a black flexible ribbed trim for fit retention and a woven branded sports label has been attached onto the front hem.

The epitome of comfort with a plush brushed reverse, a considered choice of 13oz cotton polyester blend has been used for the Chase Crewneck Sweatshirt to capture the brand’s history of pieces typical of sports kit to accompany hard wearing canvas workwear for additional warmth. Nowadays most commonly used for decoration rather than purpose, Carhartt WIP have utilised the famous v-stitch insert for its original intention to absorb sweat around the neckline during exercise. Not only adding authenticity to the design, the ribbed material works to retain the fit of the neckline alongside raglan sleeves that encourage a full range of movement. Offering an alternative to classic colours such as grey or black, this light flour colourway is an inconspicuous shade that will pair with pretty much anything.

Noticeably high quality in both construction and finish in addition to being versatile for both styling and purpose, the Carhartt Chase Hoodie combines practicality with premium comfort making it an all year round essential. Seen in a ‘cloudy’ colourway which offers a softer take on otherwise dark grey heather or vibrant colza yellow options. The regular cut works with the heavyweight cotton/poly blend to protect against cold chills, alongside raglan sleeves that enhance comfort. Typical of authentic sportswear designs, flatlock stitching secures details such as the front kangaroo pouch pocket which has extended stitch lines that both decorate and strengthen key stress points. Colour matched to suit the rest of the design, the stitches are in addition to basic seams which promote the practicality of the hoodie for activewear or as a warm base layer below workwear. The adjustable split hood is lined with soft cotton and for an elegant touch the Carhartt ‘C’ emblem has been embroidered in metallic gold thread on the edge of the left sleeve for signature detailing that doesn’t deter from the design’s luxe simplicity.

Appearing within the ‘Icons Remastered’ collection, the Carhartt Michigan Chore Coat is immediately recognisable through its signature detailing and OG fit. Carrying a seasonal colour palette each season which includes the iconic Hamilton Brown - appropriately named in tribute of the company’s founder Hamilton Carhartt - the design remains one of the most respected pieces from the brand’s legacy and only requires subtle changes each season for this very reason.

In contrast to the previous summer edition which saw a polyester mesh lining introduced for breathability below a 100% organic cotton shell, a soft blanket lining returns in its place to provide ample warmth without unwanted bulk. Accentuated by a vertical stripe print design the lining contrasts to the block colour, duck canvas exterior which is crafted with triple-stitch construction across its naturally hardwearing, water repellent surface. Dark brown fine wale corduroy has been selected for the collar for additional character and durability which is enhanced by premium gold fastenings below.

Having progressed from a history of use within the military to a staple everyday trouser style, the Cargo Jogger utilises famously lightweight but abrasion resistant ‘Columbia’ ripstop cotton with a signature patterned surface. Not a new style by any means but continuing to gain traction within streetwear, cargo pants have been dubbed a key style for AW19.

Carhartt WIP have chosen elasticated trims at the waist and ankle cuffs for a secure fit when active and for casual leisurewear the drawcord allows for a more relaxed fit. Demonstrating their reputation for cut and construction, a horizontal pleat detail runs across the front of either knee and neat top stitching secures the seams. Zip secured pockets on either side of the waist offer storage of essentials in addition to two velcro secured compartments on the side of the thighs that harness the designs utilitarian origins. Whilst the cypress rinsed edition taps into the original purpose of the design, both the blue rinsed and black colourways bring a more refined finish.

Offering solid building blocks for a contemporary wardrobe, Carhartt WIP are never ones to compromise and continue to supply a rich library of styles each season. Alongside more experimental patterns and prints that tap into modern streetwear trends, their historical ethos for durability, style and quality remains strong and is what successfully sets them aside in a league of their own.
