Inspired by late ‘90s court shoes, this edition of the new adidas Liberty Cup has been designed by Southbank native Chewy Cannon as part of the 2019 adidas Rider Series. The selected core black colourway with a gum outsole offers a refined look across the models exaggerated proportions, with deluxe gold metallic branded accents that highlight the collab through ‘chewy’ lettering alongside a trefoil emblem. Premium suede has been chosen for the uppers for a durable finish, with curved full grain leather overlays along the outer edge above a rubber ollie insert on the midsole. The wide tongue has a smooth nylon top layer, a padded fabric underside and sits below black cotton laces which are held in place with molded TPU eyestays. A woven label has been stitched towards the top of the tongue and shows a low-key ‘the brand with the three stripes’ text design. On the back of the heel a shiny leather overlay has been added with a two stone stripe loop above for ease of entry. Throughout the inside a breathable mesh lining has been added alongside a molded adiprene sockliner for impact support. The thick rubber outsole features adituff reinforcement for impressive durability and a sticky gum rubber bottom supplies quality grip.
Taking design ques from an era when skateboarding was being pushed to new heights and the boundaries of traditional tennis aesthetics were redefined, this addition of the adidas Liberty Cup combines credibility with style and authenticity with function. The Rider Series welcomes a new footwear model each month that has been designed by selected team riders which have so far included Diego Nájera, Ishod Wair, Na-kel Smith and Tyshawn Jones. Cannon was raised in Great Yarmouth and made the move into the capital which evidently led to him becoming a regular at Southbank and a part of the infamous PWBC.
